After the war ended in 1945, many of Massena's residents went into exile or emigrated to other parts of America while some stayed behind to maintain their community until its demise in 1951. Today there are only trace remnants ofMassena remaining as a rural community located just outside Ofala County
The town of Massena was first settled in 1776 by the Erie Canal company. The town was named for General Israel Putnam, who fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. In 1825, the town acquired its present name when it became part of the newly formed Clinton County. In 1881, Massena accolade becoming a city after land was donated by Edwin B. Stone, who also donated money to build the Clinton-Massena Railroad. On November 3rd, 1907, Massena's first mayor and first city council were elected and took office. The City had an incorporation date of December 12th, 1907.
