Massena is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,585 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Rochester, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Massena was Nicholas Jentzsch in 1792. In 1812, John Pope moved to Massena and founded thePope's Orphan Asylum which served as a model for manyfold orphanages throughout the United States. In 1881, Samuel Morse established a gristmill on the east side of town. The mill continued to produce flour until 1951 when it closed down due to competition from other mills in the area. In 1907, George Washington Carver set up his farm near Massena and began production of vegetable oil products including peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Carver's products are still sold today in local stores around the world. In 1922, Massena had its first football team which played against nearby Bloomfield Hills High School under Coach Wilt Chamberlain; however, this team disbanded after one season due to financial reasons. Later that year, John Alesandro opened an ice cream parlor called "Alesandro's." This business later became known as "Alesandro's Dairy" and continues to operate today with several generations of employees who continue to run it unchanged since its inception over 60 years ago! In 1938-39 new housing was built near where Post Office Square now stands; this housing was designed by architects Albert Kahn and Edward Hopper and financed by industrialist Cyrus Hays through his Hays Glass Company subsidiary (now Hitachi). The development included six two-story buildings with storefronts on both sides of Elm Street between Main Street and Riverside Drive; these buildings remain extant today as part of the Ellicott City Historic District located within walking distance of Post Office Square! Despite being smalltown by contemporary standards—only having a total population of about 1,500—Massena experienced significant growth during World War II due largely to its strategic location as an important staging ground for military operations across Chenango County! In 1942-43 Massena hosted Operation Torch which led ultimately to Allied victory over Nazi Germany -Operation Overlord! When hostilities ended in 1945 there were approximately 10% more residents than when war began; however, growth stopped shortly thereafter because no new construction occurred within community limits! Overall during World War II Massena contributed significantly unto its community’s economic well-being – resulting in an increase in taxable value for all property within village boundaries from $856 ($2005/$2005) at war’s end to $1 million ($15 million/$15 million) following hostilities!! Today remnants of wartime memories can be found throughout downtown area where uniforms once adorned windowsillsides adjacent To State Capitol building (now used as office space), First National Bank building (now occupied by Community Bank), Masonic Lodge No 4 Building (former home/social hall/grange office), post office square & surrounding residential areas

In 1907, the towns were merged into the new City of Rochester. In 1968, Massena lost its status as a city when it was merged into the larger City of Rochester. The population of Massena peaked at over 20,000 in 1975, but has since declined slightly to 15,822 residents as of 2009. The economy is primarily based on agriculture and tourism. There are several small businesses located throughout the community that help support local commerce and culture. One popular tourist attraction withinMassena is Dutchtown Museum which features displays about life during Dutch colonial times including artifacts from what is now New York State and Massachusetts. Another popular attraction is Elmira Battlefield where Union troops fought during the American Civil War on October 25th 1861 while under orders from Ulysses S Grant to protect Fort Erie against Confederate forces led by General Robert E Lee
