The town of Massena, New York is located in Erie County and has a population of around 12,500. The town was founded in 1795 by the merger of two other settlements, Whitehall and West Massena. In 1813, John Cushing became the first settler in what is now Massena and built a log cabin on the bank of the river. In 1834, Anthony Nutting settled near Massena and helped to establish what is today Nutting State Park. In 1865, Samuel Gardner purchased 3 acres east of present-day Massena for $10 from James Airdt. At this time, there were only a few isolated farms scattered around central Erie County; however, after Gardner's purchase, more farmers moved into the area and agriculture became an important part of local life. In 1928, Joseph Masten moved to Massena from Canandaigua to become manager of American Electric Power Company's (AEP) Niagara Falls plant. Masten would play an important role in turning around AEP during a difficult period for the company during World War II. During that time he also served as president of Erie County Industrial Development Authority (ECIDA). Today MassENA is home to many businesses including Wegmans supermarkets and several smaller stores along with a number of recreational sites such as Nutting State Park and Garrison Lake Recreation Area. There are also several schools in town including Wordsworth Elementary School (5th through 8th grades), Adamson Middle School (9th through 11thgrades), Stonington High School (12th-14th grades), and Central Catholic High School which offers classes up to college level courses primarily in business/commerce/engineering/maths/. Additionally there are several churches affiliated with different denominations such as Pentecostalism United Church Of Christ (), Roman Catholicism (), Methodist Episcopal Church () and Lutheranism (). Finally, there are several parks within walking distance including Garrison Lake Recreation Area (), Wegmans supermarket (), Anthony Nutting State Park (), Stonington High School Athletic Association ()and Central Catholic High school Athletic Association ().
In 1837, the town of Massena was organized. A year later, in 1838, it became a village. In 1851, it became an incorporated town. On February 14, 1860, Massena was renamed for General John S. Massie.
