Massena is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-East Syracuse metropolitan area. The town is named after Captain John Massena and his family who settled there in 1792. The first permanent settler in Massena was Capt. John Massena and his family who arrived on horseback from Canada in 1792. In 1812, Rev. Drury erected a small log cabin on an island in the then unincorporated village of Upton which served as parish church until 1824 when the island was detached fromMassena and annexed to Syracuse by act of Congress under the name of Canandaigua (after Niagara Falls). The new parish had no priest but functioned as a mission station until 1829 when Rev. Drury returned to Massena and built a larger brick Church on Main Street which still stands today with its original belfry tower. From this point forward, MassENA became an incorporated village with its own board of trustees responsible for local affairs including schools, hydroelectric power development, planning and zoning matters; while common services were provided by churches affiliated with Syracuse’s organized religious groups (eastern Congregationalists being predominant) until 1899 when these functions were transferred to newly created Onondaga County government through an act passed by the New York State Legislature entitled An Act for Consolidating Governments within Onondaga County; known also as An Act to Secure Certain Rights incident thereto etc.). In 1860, George Washington Stephenson began construction on what would become Erie Canal here at present day's Dunkin' Donuts restaurant complex just southwest of downtown Massena. This ambitious venture led directly to incorporation as a borough in 1898; two decades later it became Town of Massena following passage by legislative charter Revision No.(No.) 12/3/1921 via resolution adopted by Town Board at its meeting held November 15th prior thereto authorizing such action pursuant to section one paragraph one hundred thirty-six(a) of said Constitution providing that “ within any given year there shall be two years” public notice thereof having been given orally or written notice thereof throughout this entire county annually preceding such meeting notwithstanding General Assembly adjournment sine die during that year; notwithstanding that said Constitution provides otherwise provided hereinabove enumerated except where specifically different hereinbelow stated...the provisions set forth hereinabove Shall apply only to those portions now included within the Borough mentioned therein ...thus making possible without affecting any portion now existing outside our Township.... For all other purposes whatsoever all Laws Applicable hereto shall continue as they do now." In 1937 it merged into Uniontown Township thence becoming City of massENA effective July 1st 1938 following passage by city council at its meeting held December 5th prior thereto authorising such merger pending application for annexation by Onondaga County subject only to approval thereofby county executive committee.. Today nearly seventy percent (70%)of all businesses located inside Dunkin' Donuts are related either directly or indirectly to upstream manufacturing companies employed there since early 1990s locally and internationally Onondaga County formed effective January 1st 1920 uniting parts northwardly adjoining each other eastwardly lying within Seneca Lake along with Herkimer & Oneida Counties resulting in creation of Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area
