Massena is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 3,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Massena was first settled by the Dutch in 1624 and named San Carlos de la Cueva after the Spanish governor of New Netherland, Don Francisco de Ossorio y Meneses. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Clausen who arrived in 1627. In 1786, John Baron bought land east of present-day Massena from Nicholas Clausen for £5 per acre. Baron organized a post office in 1787 and named it Massena after himself and his family. In 1805 Samuel Morse built a sawmill on what is now Route 9 south of town to supply mills in Rome with lumber for their construction projects there. The town prospered until 1837 when the Erie Canal opened up new markets for lumber and heavy industry came into being; this led to closures of many mills and overall job losses for Massena residents. In 1840, local farmers started raising livestock including cows and pigs to provide milk for local consumers as well as woolens for export; today’s feedlot stands near where Main Street meets Route 9 across from Old Academy Schoolhouse Museum (now part of Town Hall). During World War II the USAAF developed an airfield at nearby Westchester Air Force Base which served as a training ground for bomber pilots during World War II. RAF Station Fakenham also stood adjacent to the village during wartime years; both facilities are now gone but their legacy remain: Long Point Road runs parallel to runway 08/26 which still remains active today as an agricultural research field used by several universities including Cornell University's Department of Forest Resources Research & Education) A post office called massena was established in 1907 under postal name Indian Mills west of present day Main Street; it operated until 1913 when it became Post Office #2 here at Academy Schoolhouse Museum (now part of Town Hall). In 1957–58 Congressman James Jarmusch visited Massena while he was running for state Senate against incumbent Lucius Cushing III; Jarmusch caught wind that some developers were making offers “to take down entire villages if they didn't give them money” so he promised not to support any development project without community input He won handily thanks to his relationships with powerful people within his district As State Senator he pushed through important legislation aimed at improving educational opportunities statewide such as Specialty Schools Act (1965), Early Childhood Development Authority Act (1978), etc.; these measures helped create more jobs throughout our state After leaving elected life he served two terms as Town Supervisor before retiring In 2000 he foundedthe James Jarmusch Foundation which provides grants amounting up to $100K+ annually towards programs serving low income communities across New York City

Massena is a town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse, NY-Buffalo-Albany-Ithaca Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Massena was Nicholas Peschke who arrived in 1786. The town was named for General John Massena and his regiment during the American Revolution. The most important event of Massena's early days was when a brigade of militia under Colonel George Washington attacked a French military post on June 22, 1792. In 1802, an act were passed by the New York state legislature authorising the erection of two schools and one store. On November 2nd of that year, Reverend Edward Everett took possession of First Congregational Church located on what is now Main Street and Main Avenue which had been built as a school for boys in 1800 by Reverend John Woolcott and his wife Ann Bassett Woolcott with funds raised from subscription notices placed within five miles of the town center. At first services were held at Mr.. Woolcotts home; but due to lack of space at Mrs. Woolcotts house (now known as Griggs Hall), services began officiately at First Congregational Church on December 15th 1802 by Revd Everett himself! Massena's growth continued through much of the 19th century as both agricultural land became available along with new homes being erected throughout town periphery such as Ferry Road to Thrapple Hill north across from where today’s Academy Rd., intersects Route 20A near Interstate 81Exit 7B (the site where I-81/20E now meets Route 20A). In 1876 there were only 8 families living in Massena while it contained over 100 people according to local historian Hosea Fenton: “It would be impossible today to give even approximate figures for all those who have since moved away or died; suffice it to say that not one single person has left any mark upon our communitylv’ And so we continue – unchanged and unchanged by time – proud members ol this unique village development...” It wasn't until after World War II that Massena truly exploded with growth thanks largely to manufacturing plants opened up by various businesses including Anker Tire & Rubber Company (founded 1912) which employed many locals; Ford Motor Co.; Carrier Corporation (1925), Sears Roebuck & Co.; Mattel Toys Inc.; locally produced Radio Shack stores started up throughout Greater Syracuse area - many still extant today - followed by Digital Equipment Corp., HSBC Bank USA, IBM PC Division Headquarters before leaving Massena altogether following corporate consolidation in 1984 although some relics remain such as Storz Machine Shop building on Ferry Road which served until 1976 as Gary Reuther Chrysler parts plant making Plymouth automobiles etc.).
