There are many references to gun cleaning kits in the early history of Massena. One reference is from 1839, when Nicholas-Jacques Conte wrote: "Inhabitants of this village have for many years used a kind of soap made of lime and alum which they call “gun-sandal”, because it is very good at cleansing firearms." In 1868, Charles W. Townsend described a kit that included a pan and brush, a cloth and bucket, and water. In 1897, Fenton Sheehan reported that the town had an arsenal with 10 guns. From 1903 to 1907, the Massena Rifle Association donated $5 for each box of ammunition received from local gun dealers. The first using machineguns was on October 15th 1906 when Capt. George Roche shot two rabbits with his Spencer rifle while hunting in the woods near the town limits. On November 1st 1906 Maj.-Gen Halleck ordered all artillery batteries to open fire upon Fort Trumbull as part of an attack on Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show at Niagara Falls (the first time American artillery had been used during combat). Many people in Massena were able to see or hear the gunfire from up close; some attribute this to the fact that there were large numbers of rifle barrels lying around town after being unloaded from cannons at Fort Erie (on Lake Ontario) during construction projects related to WWI. Captain Roche was awarded both a Medal of Honor and a pension by President Woodrow Wilson for his actions that day. During World War II, many Massena residents volunteered their services with military units stationed in New York City or other parts of America. Some residents even took up arms against Japan until 1945 when Japan surrendered unconditionally. After the war ended, most residents returned home but some remained in New York City where they continued working with businesses related to munitions production until 1975 when New York state passed its Gun Control Act which banned handguns within 25 miles of any school or business providing service to those under 21 years old.* This law also required background checks for all handgun sales** .massena'sGun Cleaning Kits History*

Massena is a small town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 986 at the 2010 census. The village of Massena was formed from part of the village of West Massena in 1881. The first settlers to the area were farmers and fur traders who began arriving in the early 1800s. By 1838, there were 10 families living in what is now Massena. In 1847, George Washington Carver arrived and started a potato farm near present-day Massena. From this farm, he exported potatoes to Europe for marketing purposes. In 1881, the town of West Massena was created from parts of both villages when they merged. At that time, it had a population of just 27 people. After World War I ended, many residents left for various reasons – including the war itself – but many more followed after the Depression hit in 1931. In 1948, Edward Turkey opened his restaurant on Main Street called "Turkey's" which became an overnight sensation in Massachusetts Avenue (now First Street) due to its unique Turkish-themed dishes and atmosphere. This led to Turks opening similar restaurants all over America before finally retiring in 1984 with his son Osman Turk as his successor;Osman still owns and operates most of his father's restaurants today across North America. Today, Massena is home to a variety of businesses such as banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo), grocery stores (Hershey Foods Company), car dealerships (Ford Motor Company), beauty salons (Lysol Corporation), leatherworking mills (Eddie Bauer Leather Inc.), two churches (Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints and Protestant Episcopal Church Of The Holy Spirit) and several schools including Saint John Fisher School District No 1 which serves students grades PreK-8th grade along with tribal programs offered by Delaware Indian Nation High School District #1 located just north on Route 11A off Interstate 490 between James Road/Onondaga Lake Rd./Lake Ontario Dr./Route 11A). Many locals also enjoy fishing due to its well known lakefront fishing spots such as Dutch Lake (#2 spot on US map) as well as beautiful Diamond Head Island just south of town center off routes 12A and 460R which can be reached via boat or kayak or by driving down route 460R approximately one mile east from town center whereupon you will see an electric golf cart dealership operated by Egon Schiele Golf Cart Dealership LLC which offers lessons/rentals/buying/selling carts/golf equipment etc.). There are also several tennis courts located within walking distance should you wish to take advantage thereof while spending your day outside!
