Massena, New York is a small town in Upstate New York located on the east side of Lake Ontario. The population was 7,674 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls-Lake George, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Massena was first settled by Algonquian Indians in what is now Niagara County in 1784. After meeting with English settlers and traders around that time, they decided to name their new community after Sir James Massena (1692-1768), one of the British commissioners who led an expedition against Iroquois Confederacy during the Seven Years' War. A post office called Massena was established in 1807, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The town took its present name from its founder, James A. Massena Sr., when he purchased land here from John Woolrich for $5 per acre (2/3 pound). During World War II, Massena played a significant role as a strategic military camp for training troops assigned to fight in North Africa and Europe. Today it remains home to a detachment of United States Air Force Reserve Command's 1st Bomb Wing which operates two KC-135 Stratotankers stationed at Lackland AFB near Dallas TX on alternate weeksdays providing refueling support for NATO Allied air operations over Kosovo and Bosnia; Operation Southern Watch; and various other missions vital to US security interests worldwide

Massena is a small town in upstate New York, located on the east side of Lake Ontario. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The town is named after John Massena, who settled there in 1793. John Massena had arrived in what is now Niagara County, New York in 1793 as part of the larger group of settlers that included his brother Nicholas and cousin Christopher Palmyra. John and his family were among the first to arrive in this area, likely around 1800. They began to make their mark on the community by establishing a tannery and later a gristmill. The town of Massena was founded on November 7, 1805 by Captain George Sibley and First Lieutenant Samuel Dunham from nearby Kingston. Initially it consisted only of two houses on land donated by Major General Isaac Brockman. By 1830, however, Massena had become an important regional center with three stores and several schools as well as a post office and jail (the first being built in 1824). In 1827-28 local Republicans organized an event known as "The Great Erie Canal Rage" against Andrew Jackson's proposed canal connection through Northern Ontario; this led to violent protests throughout the region which continued into 1829 when Jackson's decision not to build was made public knowledge (the project would eventually be abandoned). On July 6th 1865 Union troops burned down three barns within sight of MassENA while skirmishing with Confederate forces near Fort Erie; this attack helped rally support for General Ulysses S. Grant during his April 2nd 1862 victory over Robert ELee at Gettysburg. In 1886-87 local farmers formed a local Improvement Society which developed many aspects of today’s economy including farming methods and marketing products such as eggs and milk
On the night of December 12, 1814, a group of men and women led by Captain George Herkimer attacked and burned the town of Massena, New York. The attack was in retaliation for British military occupation of the area.
