The name of the town is likely derived from the Massena Piscataqua River and its numerous islands. The first European tosight of what is now Massena was by Giovanni da Verrazzano on April 14, 1493 while exploring present-day Albany during his voyage eastward along the North American coast. He named one of the islands "Island No. 1" after his San Salvador vessel which he sailed over from Spain that day. In 1786 Governor Tryon founded an Agricultural College here and gave it its present name: Tryon Academy of Technology and Applied Arts (now Syracuse University). In 1827, General John Young moved his headquarters from Lancaster to Massena in order to provide staging areas for operations against Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. This event helped make Massena a popular tourist destination for years to come. In 1859 Isaac Brock built a mill on the river north of town; it still stands today and produces flour, paper products, cattle feed, insurance policies and other items as part of its business today known as Brock Mill Associates Inc., LLC.. Brock also donated land for Missionary Baptist Church which was dedicated in 1865; it remains one of the most prominent buildings in town today (#8). In 1886 local farmer Wm Fenton organized a school system with six schools: three public schools (grades K-12), one private school (grades 7-12), and two agricultural schools (grades 9-12). A post office called Massena had been established in 1887 but closed just four years later because there were no letters arriving fromMassena! In 1916 local resident Edwin Jaffe donated $10 million towards building a new arena which served as both home court for Syracuse University men's basketball teams and also used for various performances by professional artists including Irving Berlin who made his first performance at the arena on January 20th 1924 before an audience that included then president Franklin D Roosevelt . The arena continued to be used until 1992 when it was replaced by nearby Ricoh Coliseum which seated up to 50,000 people. Massena, New York is a small town located in western Onondaga County, New York. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. The town was first established in 1798 by Captain John Hall and his family, who had come from Rhode Island. The original name of the settlement was "Niskayuna", but it was changed to Massena in 1803 after the town's founders bought land on which to build their house. The first post office in Massena opened in 1807. In 1812, the town's first school opened and continued operation until 1923. After being burned down by a fire in 1861, Massena rebuilt and moved its central business district to its current location northeast of the village square in 1865. That same year saw the opening of what is now the oldest restaurant in Massena – John Fenton's Tavern – which served as a community center for local farmers and their families until 1978 when it closed due to economic decline. In 1916, Jock Mahoney became one of only two people ever convicted of murder within five miles of Syracuse, NY; he faced execution but received a life sentence instead because he had been tried and found guilty outside New York State common law jurisdiction (the then-newly created federal District Court system).Mahoney spent seventeen years behind bars before being released on parole after serving time at Sing Sing Correctional Facility near Auburn, New York; he died there in 1991 at age 89 years old. In 1984, massena celebrated its centennial with an estimated attendance of around 100 people including representatives from all over Canada who came for a celebration honoring both American pioneers such as George Armstrong Custer and Sir John Atherton while also paying homage to local historical figures like Daniel Webster Sr., David Levy and others associated with that era.
