Massena is a town in Herkimer County, New York, United States. The population was 1,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Massena were farmers and their families who arrived from Sussex County, New Jersey in 1814. In 1825, the townsite was named for General John Massena and his regiment of horse artillery which fought at Saratoga Springs during the American Civil War. In 1870, the Erie Railroad passed through Massena and nearby Stillwater on its way to Buffalo. This increased trade and industry in both towns which led to more development around these railroad tracks. In 1916, when World War I began there were concerns that war would spread across Europe and lead to famine in America; this did not materialize however as America entered into World War II with expectations of helping allies against Germany. When the war ended Massena became an important center for food production due to its location near Niagara Falls National Park as well as other resources such as lumber businesses and agriculture. The post-war boom brought new development such as apartments, shopping malls and a large prison until it closed down in 1984 after being used for over 50 years by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (Bureau). After 40 years of dormancy newly built housing sprang up along with a small business park that included a factory making contact lenses for eyesight correction called Regal Lenses Incorporated followed by two restaurants one open since 1978 called The Outlaw Tavern while another opened just last year called The Grille & Barbecue which specializes in comfort foods like ribs and chicken nuggets served up with sides like mashed potatoes or green beans

This event helped to spark the American Revolution. In 1803, Massena was incorporated as a village within New York County. In 1824, it became a town. On December 13, 1860, Massena was named after General George Washington during the American Civil War.
