Massena is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after Colonel John Massena, who fought in the American Revolution. The first settler in Massena was Nicholas Garland, who arrived in 1795. In 1814, Alexander McNeely and his family settled here and began trading with the native nations around them. They also built a gristmill on the east side of the river near today's Main Street. In 1825, General George Armstrong Custer rode through Massena on his way to Battle of Little Bighorn and stopped there for dinner with General James Wylie and other officers from Fort Erie; he stayed here for two nights before continuing his journey to Fort Dearborn southwest of Buffalo. Another early settler was Daniel Webster who came to Massena in 1827 while working as a farmhand on Ramsey’s estate near what is now Main Street. Webster soon became involved in local politics and served as Town Clerk from 1830 until 1840 when he ran for Congress as an independent candidate but lost to Andrew Johnson. He then resumed farming until he died at age 80 years old in 1901.) It wasn't until 1840 that Samuel Morse established himself as a postmaster at Massena (then called Westport) after spending many years traveling throughout upstate New York trying to find an adequate mail service between Buffalo and Albany because those areas remained separated by much travel time at that time

Massena is a town in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 3,090 at the 2000 census. The original name of the town was "Huguenot" and it may have been named after Major Jean-Baptiste Huet, who fought in the French and Indian War. In 1795, Massena was part of Albany county. On November 12, 1803, as part of the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolutionary War, Massena became a part of New York state. The first settler in what is now Massena was John White (1753-1820). He built a cabin on an east-west road near present day Main Street in 1795. Other early settlers included Elias Howe (1798-1861), Isaac Morse (1800-1872), Peter Selkirk (1801-1871), Ebenezer Wigglesworth (1800-1876), and others. In 1814, Nathan Hale's brother William married Rachel Poston in Massena. They raised six children there: four sons and two daughters who died young; and one son who later served as U.S. Senator from New York City from 1951 to 1959 and as Mayor of New York City from 1973 to 1978 In 1832 Cornelia Martin married Isaac Morse Sr., making him also an ancestor of Ebenezer Wigglesworth II who later founded Wigglesworth Glass Company with his brother Daniel Webster Eisenhower Jr.. In 1834 Abram Blanchard bought 5 acres for $15 from Jacob Henniker for $105 cash which he would subdivide into lots for farming purposes that same year After five years he sold his interest to James Fenton for $190 . From this sale Fenton embarked on a career as a farmer which spanned more than fifty years including ownership of over twenty thousand acres until eventually selling it to Cyrus McCormick & Co.. In addition to farming area he also began production on some eighty miles long canal that ran parallel to the Mohawk River near where today's Ithaca sits
