Massena is a small town located in the heart of Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,151 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded on July 6, 1776 by refugees from the French and Indian War who had moved to what is now Massena from nearby Auburn. The men of Massena were able to build a shelter and storehouse which they used as their winter quarters for six months while they awaited news of reinforcements that could help them protect their hometown against British invaders. Construction began on a church in 1778, but construction ceased due to lack of funding. A school was also built in 1778-79 but it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1802, the first stagecoach line arrived in Chenango County and stopped at Massena; this increased traffic and led to further development of the village. In 1814, Major General George Armstrong Custer gave an Address at which he declared war on Great Britain and set off for battle against British forces near Saratoga Springs in New York State; during his visit to Massena he ordered the construction of a large military hospital in memory of his fallen comrades who had lost their lives during that conflict. After years of decline following American victory over Great Britain at Waterloo in 1815, Massena started again with new development including several mills along with housing developments; however, World War I caused significant damage throughout the village so much so that by 1919 only about 60% remained standing (the rest being destroyed by fire). After World War II many families chose not to return because economic opportunities were fewer and there were no schools available for those living inside city limits (outside of which there was only one high school). However since 2000 some residents have returned back into town after enjoying respite from city life thanks to its proximity to Niagara Falls National Park & casino resorts within easy reach.

In 1814, the town of Massena was renamed after General Lafayette. In 1827, the town of Massena merged with the village of White Sands to form the new town of White Sands.
