It is considered an agricultural and rural community with a primarily white population. The name Massena comes from the Onondaga word "massedon," meaning "a mass or quantity." The first settler in Massena was Nicholas J. Hamilton in 1792-93. He named the town after his friend and mentor, Sir George Massinger, 4th Baronet of Westport (1681-1746). For many years, Massena had no post office because it did not exist on the same map as Syracuse. In 1827, James Hickey founded the village of Eastman on land that he had purchased from Nicholas Hamilton's widow. In 1834, John Witherspoon came to Massena and began his grocery store which soon became a large commercial center for the area. The railroad reached Massena in 1849 and made transportation much easier for settlers and businesses. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses in Massena with a payroll of $25,000 per year! The close proximity to major cities such as Syracuse and Buffalo made farming an important aspect of life for many residents during this time period. Today, most residents are engaged in agriculture or ranching operations; however, some older homes still stand providing interesting evidence of early industry activity in this small town! Many talented individuals lived and worked here during those times including: Burt Lancaster (director), Orson Welles (writer/director), Alan Ladd (actor), Clyde Toliver (producer), Jay Leno (actor/ comedian), Chevy Chase ( actor) etc… Many people have commented on how charming this small town is - its quaint architecture combined with its warm people make it one special place!

Massena is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 2,287 at the 2010 census. The community is named after John and Eliza Massena. The first settler in what is now Massena was Abram Sinkin in 1812. He and his family were the first to plow the land that became today's town. In 1824, Amasa Dodge established a gristmill here which still stands today. In 1827, Nicholas Proctor erected a saw mill on the stream that flows through town. By 1830, there were three mills in town - two of which remain extant today (the Proctor Mill Museum and the Dodge Gristmill Museum). In 1836, John Cushing opened a blacksmith shop in town. This business continued until about 1840 when it closed because of competition from more modern businesses. A post office was established here in 1836; it remained open until 1870 when it was discontinued by postal service due to consolidation of mail services within Onondaga County.. In 1846, George Washington Carpenter moved to Massena from Syracuse with his wife Sarah Jernigan and their four children – children who would become as famous for their work as their father had been before them- including future Congressman Cornelius Vanderbilt III. Carpenter operated a grocery store for many years before moving into produce production near present-day Main Street where he built one of the distinctive red barns still standing in town today (now part of the Dodge Gristmill Museum). A schoolhouse operated here until 1860 when Instructional Buildings No 1 & 2 were erected on First Street commanding an imposing view over downtownMassena from both sides of the street! The School District No 5 constructed these buildings but they have since been demolished and replaced by part of First Street’s current intersection with Third Avenue! In 1865, large numbers of Union soldiers arrived during World War II at nearby Fort Erie for training purposes fencesetting new land for development east of present day MassENA along Highway 711 (). Soldiers barracks were built on this site eventually becoming known as Ftruitt Place housing later various commercial properties including movie theaters etc... One can still see some remnants of these barracks/housing complexes such as an arched entrance gate/wall along Frontage Road just west of 3rd AvenueE
