A detachment of American troops under Colonel John Sullivan camped here for three weeks before moving back up the sound to Manhattan to help battle British forces at Brooklyn Heights. In 1804, Alexander Macaulay purchased land around present-day Massena from Nicholas Livingston for $5,000 cash and spent the next twenty years developing it into what is today an agricultural center with dairy farms and hay barns supplying local markets with their product throughout much of central New York State.
