Massena is a town in Orleans County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–New Rochelle, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Massena first appeared on maps in 1785 as "Mascone". When the township was organized in 1824 it included present-day Massena and parts of what are now Oswego and West Seneca Townsships. The township name was changed to Orleans County on February 3, 1846. In 1898, when Rome became an incorporated city and the boundaries of Orleans County were revised, Massena lost its status as a village and became part of Rome. In 1906 the borough of Rome merged with the neighboring town of West Seneca to form a new borough called Rome. On April 12th1994 then-mayor Donald J. Trump announced that he would not seek re-election due to health reasons and resigned from his position effective May 9th1994 setting off a municipal election which resulted in Democrat James Pappas defeating Trump by 54 votes to 42%. On July 11th2006 Anthony Albanese won an open seat on the Albany City Council vacated by Jeff Klein after he was elected Assemblyman from Queens On November 15th2010 Anthony Albanese won reelection unopposed as Mayor of Syracuse

Massena is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 2,724 at the 2010 census. The name of Massena is derived from the Iroquois word meaning "settlement on the north side of the falls". Jameson and others claim that it may be derived from Manasseh, one of the twelve Jews who clandestinely escaped slavery in Greece in 1847. The first European to visit Massena was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after his patron saint, Mary Magdalene. In 1714, during the French and Indian War, General George Washington's army passed through Massena on its way to Canandaigua Lake and Battle of Stony Brook. After this victory over British forces near Albany he became known as "The Father of our Country." In 1802, John Stevens founded Stevens Institute of Technology (later Columbia University) in Nyack, New York; while here he acquired land which included what is now Massena.Stevens donated most of his remaining land to the town for a school district in 1892. At that time there were only three buildings: an old barn used as a meetinghouse and jail; an academy built by grading up said land; and a blacksmith shop with forge west of present day Main Street. A smallpox epidemic destroyed much of central NY during 1819-20 so Stevens built two new schools just east of where they are today: One for boys and one for girls (the first girls’ school west of Buffalo). A gristmill also stood on what is now West Main Street until 1865 when it was replaced by a store building operated by Wm Fenton & Sons grocery company which burned down on December 5th1966 The post office opened at Massena on October 24th1834 under dateline Rochester In 1861 Union troops burned all but four homes withinmassena limits during their raid against advanced Confederate forces some residents fled into Canada however most chose to stay including Mrs massa who rebuilt her home at 5 Elm street It later became known as “Queen Bee” Home
The town of Massena, New York was established in 1789. The first settler in the area was Nicholas Young. By 1806, there were over 100 residents living in Massena. In 1815, the town passed away and was taken over by Canada.
