The first known European exploration of what is now Massapequa Park took place on July 8, 1614 when Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew landed on the then uninhabited island of Nipissing in search for a passage to India. In 1764, John Strong established a mill on the banks of the river called Newtown Creek and soon developed an agricultural estate that included much of present-day Massapequa Park. In 1835, under pressure from developers looking to build new towns on Long Island's undeveloped land north of Manhattan, leaders in Nassau County decided to create Massapequa Park as its own municipality. It was named after General James Wolfe's victory at Quebec during the War of 1812 and became one of Brooklyn's most rapidly developing neighborhoods. By 1840, over half a million people had lived in what is now New York City within spitting distance of their jobs in downtown Brooklyn or Midtown Manhattan. At first done mostly by poor Irish Catholics who worked as farmers and laborers in field work or small businesses catering to working-class residents near Watermelon Row Road (now Roosevelt Avenue), but soon also by Germans, Italians and Jews who settled around mass transportation facilities like Rikers Island and Queensboro Bridge (later renamed Times Square). By 1865 enough development had occurred within the limits set by Governor Nathan Hale that it was annexed into New York City proper; however continuing growth led to more questions about how much territory should be given up for what would become today's Nassau County only 20 minutes' drive from central business district – with no public transportation available other than motor vehicles which were expensive and slow to get where you wanted to go – until finally a referendum voted in 1978 to annex all but 1/3rds of what are now Nassau County into Greater New York City through an election process that brought about hyperinflation which destroyed many homes along with entire commercial districts between Weehawken Junction southbound I-95 Exit 9A NY 27W and Croxteth Avenue eastbound Route 524 W – effectively wiping out some two centuries' worth of residential development thereabouts while also reducing parkland acreage from over 2 square miles (4 ha) using primarily cavalry charges forced open gates hidden behind high barricades onto barren flatlands immediately surrounding both communities so as not TO OPEN UP THE AREA AGAIN FOR MODERN REASONING THERE IS NOW ONLY 350 ACCESSIBLE PARKS IN MASSAQICA PARK WITH A TOTAL LAND USE OF ONLY 3 TOWNSHIPS THAT FARMS AND FARMER RANCHES USED TO COVER AN ADDITIONAL 25 HOUSES FOR THEIR CATTLE AND LABOR AT THAT TIME
