Massapequa Park is a census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The CDP was created on April 1, 1996 as a result of the New York State Legislature's enactment of S2202, which amended the boundaries of the village of Massapequa and portions of anticipation town Schuyler Falls. As a result, all but 2 square miles (4 km²) of what is now Massapequa Park were annexed by Schuyler Falls. The name "Massapequa" originated from an Indian word meaning "many peas." The first settler in what is now Massapequa Park was Isaac Newton who bought land in 1795. He named his farm "Newton's Neck". In 1807 Jonas Peskin settled on land adjacent to Newton's Neck and built himself a house called "Peskin's House" (). In 1811 Daniel Webster leased some real estate from Peskin for one year and named it after him—Webster Hall ()). By 1814 most of what is now Massapeqa Park had been developed as farmland by settlers including John Morse (), Nicholas Biddle (), Joshua Speed (); Amos Eaton (); Cornelius Vanderbilt (); Moses Hurd (); Elias Howe (); and Edward Everett (). In 1861 Samuel Morse purchased 6 acres (2 ha) near present-day Scarsdale Road () for $250 (). Samuel Morse laid out streets that run through present-day Massapequa Park. His son Ezra moved to Scarsdale in 1872 and continued to develop the park until he died in 1915 (). When Scarsdale Road was widened in 1907–08, part of it ran along the north side ofpresent-day Massapequa Lake()—this road became massapuca-road today. This highway widening project also included planting areas for tall trees that still line much of that stretch today (). Ferrymen had been ferrying passengers acrossthe lake since before European settlement; however, passenger services ended about 1920 when cars got easier to use(). Some old ferries remain at various points around the lakeshore today: North Pier Rd., White Sands Rd., East Pier Rd.,and South Pier Rd.. A large swimming pool opened at nearby East Meadow Golf Course on December 12th 1957 (#1 photo), becoming one of Nassau County’s only sports complexes with an indoor arena/facility open to the public ever constructed outside Manhattan or Brooklyn!
