It consisted of a small loop path around an open space surrounded by trees and grassy areas. Over time, progress was made on the park. A bandstand and playground were built in 1933; a tennis court and basketball court were added in 1937; a children’s play area was built in 1958; and an ice rink was purchased in 1978. In 1990, a playground addition called “The Nook”was constructed at one end of the loop path adjacent to Lake Placid Playground for children aged 3-8 years old. Today, Massapequa Park is one of New York City’s most popular parks with over 100 miles of trails that offer opportunities for active fun and relaxation. There are also several restaurants and cafes located within minutes’ walk of the shopping center which provides ample opportunity for people to enjoy fresh local produce while they shop or dine!
The first permanent English settlement in the area was at Massapequa Park, on the site of present-day Great Neck, New York in 1624. The town of Hempstead was founded nearby in 1627. In 1685, a group of colonists from Rhode Island founded Westchester County, and in 1713, the Town of Oyster Bay was established adjacent to Massapequa Park. In 1764, the latter became part of what is now Bronx County. In 1814, General George Washington visit Great Neck and Oyster Bay and recommended that land be set aside for a military post at Oyster Bay. After some debate among his officers about whether or not to establish such a post near their homes in New York City (the then only city in the United States), Washington decided to do so and named it Fort Washington after himself. The first commander of Fort Washington was Commodore John Adams. In 1825, Congress passed an act authorizing soldiers stationed at Fort Washington to provide clothing and other necessaries to settlers living on its premises. This Act also provided for school appropriations for oyster bay children. A smallpox epidemic that struck New York City during this time caused many people within Fort Washington to flee for their lives; as a result, few civilians were able to receive necessary supplies from the garrison until late in 1825 or early in 1926. In 1830s-1840s several churches were built along North River Road northwest of today's Central Park: First Presbyterian Church (1830), Methodist Episcopal Church (1831), Dunkirk Baptist Church (1832), Christmastime services were held here by members of Trinity Episcopal Parish before being transferred northward across Harlem into what is now Manhattanville Presbytery until 1847 when worship there shifted to Trinity Cathedral due largely to financial considerations stemming from tightened restrictions enacted by Governor Andrew Johnson during his administration concerning religious affiliations among non-academic Protestants with African descent living below poverty lines - Jeffery Emerson becoming rector upon appointment while still serving as pastor emeritus - Emerson's successor James Hoadly emphasized racial integration more than Emerson had done previously leading eventuallyto open enrollment at Trinity Cathedral without any prior notice or encouragement from either denomination's top leadership; beyond this point efforts tended towards more clandestine services being conducted outdoors under various aliases/identities rather than through organized worship venues despite occasional public exhibitions taking place featuring both white & black pastors preaching togetheralbeit sans organs).
