On December 12th, 1886, Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter disembarked his USS Constitution at Massapequa Pier to begin his celebrated voyage across America which would eventually lead to World War II. This event is commemorated by an annual liberty parade which takes place down Putnam Avenue downtown every year on December 12th

In 1935, a movie theater called Roosevelt Stadium opened at this same site and it served as the countyseat for Westchester until 1955 when it moved to Valhalla. In 1965, a department store called Sears began operation at this site which would be one of the largest stores ever built on Long Island. It closed down in 2005 but parts of it are still standing today including a section that houses Sears Tower which is currently under construction next to Penn Station northeast of Manhattan).
The first European settlement in the area now known as Massapequa Park was made by Dutch colonists in 1624. It was named after the Massapequa River, which they found west of their original holdings. The first permanent settler in what is now Massapequa Park was Nicholas de Villemont, who arrived in 1627. By 1639, there were six or seven families living on the site. In that year, however, an outbreak of a fever called the Great New England Famine caused much death and destruction across New Netherland. As a result of this natural disaster, many people left for safer grounds and Massapequa Park became isolated from the rest of New York City. The first residents of what is now Massapequa Park started to arrive more regularly starting in 1642. By then, most of these settlers had come from Rhode Island and Connecticut. They founded a few small villages along the banks of the Massapequa River before starting to build larger settlements on tracts that would later become part of present-day Massapequa Park. These early settlers were mostly white English Protestants who came looking for land that wasn’t subject to Spanish rule or Indian control. Over time, other religious groups began to settle in the park as well – including Methodists and Baptists in 1792 and Congregationalists in 1814 – but it remained overwhelmingly Protestant until around 1830 when Catholics started arriving too (in large numbers) during Knowlton's Rebellion against British rule in America. This change led to tension between Catholic and Protestant inhabitants of the park until 1840 when Catholics finally got their own church built at nearby Lake Success (later renamed massapequah). As America grew increasingly ethnically diverse over this period, so too didMassapugaPark populations; black Americans started moving intothe area beginning in earnest during World War II while ItalianAmericans gradually moved intothe area following its Liberation from Mussolini's regime throughout the 1960s and 1970s
