Massapequa Park is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 6,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Monroe Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Massapequa was organized in 1812 from parts of Westchester and Orange counties. In 1814, it was annexed by the City of Rochester. The city government merged with that of Syracuse in 1922. In 1840, General James Wilkinson built a home on the site now known as Wilkinson Manor and named it after himself. He also developed land around the estate for farming and development. In 1851, he sold his holdings to Captain Nathaniel Phillips for $4,000 cash plus 10% interest in future profits. Phillips renamed the estate "Phillips Manor". In 1860, businessman Isaac Brockman bought some land east of Massapequa Lake from Captain Phillips for $800 cash and donated it to the town to be used as a parkland or open space. The first public meeting on August 3rd, 1860 resulted in the incorporation of what would become Massapequa Park into Monroe County on October 1st, 1860 under the name "Newburgh Township". On July 16th 1886 President Grover Cleveland made an address at Winchester Baptist Church which can still be seen today just west of McLean Drive off Old Route 9A (now Old Route 20). The first white people to live in the area that is now Massapequa Park were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. The area was originally called "Hudson's Bay" because of the Hudson River that passed through it. In 1764, English colonists who had moved from Rhode Island began to settle in what is now Massapequa Park. They named their land after Sir George Washington, the first U.S. president and a member of the British royal family.
