The fight continued as Collins grew more aggressive. Eventually, two teenage boys got involved and tried to help Collins clear the area. One boy was shot in the shoulder with a shotgun and died; Collins fled the scene.
Massapequa Park is a census-designated place in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Long Island City–Buffalo, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Massapequa" is from the Lenape word "matka" meaning "to cover or shelter." The first settler in what became Massapequa Park was John Woolridge in 1795. Massapequa Manor and Manor Farm were acquired by Charles Bickerton in 1801, who named it after his father's estate of Maple Hill near Cambridge, England. In 1847, Nicholas Noyes purchased 5 acres (2 ha) of land east of present day Route 12 and west of the Hudson River at what is now Massapequa Junction. He founded Noyesville on this site and named it after himself and his nephew Nicholas Noyes II; both men had come to America from Great Britain as refugees during the American Revolution. In 1865, Samuel Untermeyer bought 3/5ths of an acre (0.20 ha) adjacent to Noyesville for $200 from Nicholas Noyes II and renamed it Untermeyer Farms after him too. In 1870, Alfred Ely bought 1/3rd of an acre (0.10 ha) adjoining Untermeyer Farms from Untermeyer's grandson George Washington Ely for $1 cash plus 15% interest annually untilpayment was received In 1875-76 Stephen Auchinleck built a two story wooden cottage on lot #4 for use as a summer home by members of his family including wife Louisa May Alcott; her brother Nathaniel Hawthorne; their father Amos Tuttle; their mother Louisa May Alcott’s sister Hester Parmelee; Asenath Sargent Gardner; Gertrude Stein In 1892 he sold lot #4 to Rev Edward Payson Beale Forrester who later erected a large Italianate style house which still stands today called Beale House ().Lot #5 lay next to Beale House but has been since destroyed by fire . On July 10th 1922 Captain Augustus Herrick sailed into view off the coast of Nassau Bay while anchored off Union Landing with plans to build a hotel there but abandoned them due to bad weather when they sighted Wall Street Journal office building which would become known as Battery Park City . At that time only about 100 people lived along Roosevelt Blvd./Battery Park Way., most being picnickers or weekenders visiting relatives or friends on Staten Island or Manhattan ..... That year also saw incorporation of massapaque park with its own board OF TRADE....... On November 8th 1924 cemetery opened.................................... Mrs Maud Adams officiated at opening..... Mr Wm Morton donated flowers.................As early as 1907 There were efforts made to set up golf courses here................................. On October 14 th 1908 one such course opened called Montague Golf Course............. After World War I many businesses moved out including some candy stores .......... In 1929 real estate developer Clarence Ratner developed what became known as Battery Park City....................................................................................... Many theaters were built along Roosevelt Boulevard /Battery Park Way over time such as Regal Cinemas etc ................. The area now known as Massapequa Park was first settled in the early 17th century by the Lenape Native Americans. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland from 1624 to 1664. In 1692, General John Clarke attacked and destroyed a Lenape village on what is now Route 202. The village's survivors were taken into captivity and later sold into slavery in Delaware. In 1714, Quaker Missionaries began construction of Meeting House No. 2 on Meeting House Hill in present-day Massapequa Park. The building served as their headquarters until 1827 when they built Meeting House No. 3 on East Main Street in that same location. In 1772, George Washington purchased 6 acres (2 ha) of land at present-day Massapequa Park for £50 from Jonathan Dickinson and his brother Ebenezer Dickinson Sr.. On February 14, 1772, he dedicated the park to God and set out stones for a fence around it. In 1800, Henry Clinton founded the town of Hempstead on the east side of Long Island Sound between what is now Ronkonkoma and Sayville with about 1,500 people living there including 300 Germans who had been brought over by Clinton to work on his farmlands near Hempstead Lake. When Holland Purchase was made in 1802, much of this area became part of Queens County under New York State government control based at Kingston (now Albany). However, much of rural Queens still remained within Queens County boundaries until 1862 when Nassau County was established following the American Civil War. In 1898, following an effort led by Congressman John Fenton (R-NY), legislation was passed authorizing creation of a national park system covering all mainland United States except Alaska and Hawaii which were then under Japanese rule
