The first-ever football game played in Massapequa Park took place on November 12th, 1916 against West Babylon High School. On December 3rd, 1922, Massapequa Park got its second school building which served as both a primary and secondary school from 1923 until 1957 when it becameSenior High School. In 1957, Senior High School became full-time college preparatory/secondary school with enrollment reaching 1st grade students only until 1984 when it reopened as an elementary/middle school again with 1st through 6th grade students enrolling until 1998 when it again became SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL! In 1664, John Winthrop came to America and founded Plymouth Colony on what is now Staten Island. He named it after his brother-in-law's home parish in Italy—Massa Episcopi (meaning "large island"). After America became a country, England took over its administration so Massa Episcopi was renamed New Netherland; however, this name did not stick and it reverted to Massapequa by 1784 when New York state was formed from part of England. In 1814, during the American Civil War, General George Washington's army passed through these woods near present-day Westchester County while encamped at White Plains for the winter. It is part of the Farmingdale–East Meadow–Lake Success, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Massapequa Park were Dutch colonists who landed there in 1624 and built a trading post. The name "Massapequa" was derived from an Indian word meaning "settlement." In 1814, the United States acquired lands east of Long Island Sound for $15 million dollars by purchasing land from the British Empire. The town of Hempstead was formed from parts of East Hampton and Massapequa Junction (now Sayville). In 1831, George Washington visited what is now Massapequa Park and commented on its beautiful landscape. He called it "a most excellent piece of country." In 1876, General David Huntermpower made his home here and served as Military Governor during Reconstruction in America after the Civil War. He also donated land to be used for mass transportation within the village limits- this helped spur development around Massapequa Park including hotels, baseball diamonds and other recreational facilities which continue to this day. On December 12th 1903 local resident Lewis Jaffe founded a girls' school in honor of his late wife's deceased sister Alice Jaffe Kapp Jaffe who had been educator at Yeshiva University in Brooklyn prior to her death on October 17th 1901 at age seventy-six years old.
