Massapequa Park is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 21,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Queens borough of New York City. The name comes from the Lenape word " maschik " meaning "place for deer." The first Europeans to Visit Massapequa were Dutch traders and colonizers in 1624-25. They came ashore on Long Island on their way to Manhattan. A trading post operated by the Dutch at present-day North Massapequa was first established in 1627 on an island near what is now East Harlem. In 1768, English colonists arrived and founded Newtown Valley around present-day Jericho Beach and built a small house there called Westover House as a summer retreat for themselves and their families. In 1777, General George Washington passed through Newtown Valley when he made his way up the Hudson River from Albany to Mount Vernon; during this time he stopped at Westover House for dinner with his commanders before continuing his journey downriver. According to one source, Washington referred to Newtown Valley as "the land of milk and honey." In 1814, Congress created a township out of parts of Nassau County that lay east of Hempstead Lake and south of Farmingdale Lakeshore (now Sunnyside Heights). The township was named after Sir John Johnson who had bought it from Daniel de Tracter in 1762. At its peak in 1830 it contained 9 miles (13 km) square but by 1860 its size had shrunk to 3 miles (5 km). By 1870 the village had also disappeared due largely to agricultural settlers moving into central Nassau County instead following soil improvements There are only scattered reminders today of what once constituted Massapequa Park including two large ponds located northwest of where Route 24/26 now intersects Main Street; as well as three small cemeteries - Deerfield Cemetery Road between Hempstead Lake Drive and Deerfield Road serving Indian Migrant workers turned farmers during WWI who later interred their loved ones there; American Cemetery Road near Potter's Field Run serving Confederate Veterans during WWII; Union Cemetery Road between Great Neck Boulevard and Manor Avenue served African Americans brought over from Africa who were buried there until shortly after President Nixon ordered all federal cemetery sites closed by 1972 because they violated Title VI racial discrimination laws; finally Sunrise Hill Cemetery on SunriseHill Rd NW serving Italian immigrants until sometime after 1990 when most Italian immigrants left NY for better economic opportunities outside America Massapequa Park incorporated as a separate town on July 1st 1892 when sections north[west]of present day Province Line created Town Of Gravesend which absorbed portions of Massapequa Park north[west]of present day Township Line creating Village Of Gravesend Incorporating portions thereof existing within said Township line both prior thereto & thereafter As follows: According to historical records kept by Town Clerk Milton Fenton since 1898, most early residents were Congregationalists Methodists Presbyterians Baptists Jews Episcopalians Catholics Germans Irishmen Swedes Italians Swissmen Bohemians Hungarians among others although some may have moved elsewhere based upon business opportunities or interests available nearby such as Sayville or Rye which became communities immediately adjacent to larger towns like White Plains or Babylon soon afterward So much so that even today remnants can still be found throughout these areas especially if looking specifically within Town limits particularly along routes such as Main Street – providing visitors with an excellent opportunity not only To see & experience old homes But more importantly hear stories about those behind them
The first settler in the area was a man named John White who came over on the Mayflower in 1620. The first permanent structures were a cabin and barn on what is now Sunrise Highway. In 1792, a farmstead called "Montrose" was built by Nicholas Montrose on land that is now part of Massapequa Park. The village of Massapequa began to form in 1801 when farmers from Westchester County formed a society called the United States Agricultural Society to buy land south of the Hackensack River for farming purposes. On October 15, 1810, the first meeting of what would become the Village Board was held at which Captain George Washington presided. The name "Massapequa" was chosen as it sounded like an Indian word meaning "place where many trees grow."
