The town of Massapequa Park, New York was settled in 1788 by Pieter Van der Merwe and his family. The name "Massapequa" is derived from the Mohawk word "asenapok" meaning "broad meadow." In 1814, the village of Massapequa was formed from the merger of several settlements in what is now Nassau County. The village had a population of about 350 people. In 1821, the town voted to become an incorporated village with a population of 1,000 people. On December 12, 1825, the town's charter was amended to allow for a three-story school house and five homes on High Street. In 1827, a Temperance society was organized in Massapequa Park. The first meeting took place at the home of Mrs. Lillie Bruce. In 1830, a new trunk road (now Route 9) was built through present-day Massapequa Park and it became known as Main Street. On October 15th, 1830, Benjamin Fenton purchased one acre (0.40 hectares) of land south of Main Street for $10 cash and two boards of trustees were appointed to manage it as part of the town's development plan. On May 5th, 1836 – days after General Anthony Wayne's victory over Robert E Lee at Antietam – Mayor Jobst Stirling dedicated an elliptical drive in memory of General Wayne at Elmira Grove Cemetery just east of Main Street where he had been buried soon before his death on September 3rd that year during Operation Crossroads operations against Confederate forces outside Washington D C . On July 8th following the Union victory at Bull Run Bridge over James River near Harrisonburg Va., residents demonstrated against British rule by erecting American flags throughout their towns and villages across Virginiabaugh District - including Massapequa Park which flew its national flag from every public building until November 13th when it lowered its flag to half staff in honor Of fallen soldiers Hereafter no public buildings fly ornaments Showing any affection For our Northern friends... After this event many patriotic citizens decided that flying Our Flag would be more effective than lowering It so Soon after another huge victory! Massapequa Park is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 10,554 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The first European to visit Massapequa was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after his maternal uncle, Massapequa (now Montauk). The first permanent settler was Nicholas Easton in 1792. In 1815, the town was incorporated as a village under the name of "Newmarket". It lost its charter as a village on December 12, 1915 and reverted to its original name on February 14, 1916 when Newmarket became an unincorporated community within the Town of Massapequa. It had a post office from 1815 until 1918. The community's history can be traced back to over 100 years ago when farmers in this area started growing corn and potatoes for local markets and sold their products by wagon or cart to other villages and towns in upstate New York. Many people who lived here still remember those early days because they were integral parts of the town's development and history . At one time there were more than 200 businesses located in Massapequa Park including grocery stores, hardware stores, banks and factories; many now gone but their memories live on in photographs and stories shared by residents today. One such business that has continued throughout changing times is Mrs .TIMMSONS' GARAGE which stood on Main Street between Cooks Road and Jericho Turnpike until it burned down on September 3rd, 2015 with all loss resulting from $1 million insurance policy settlement paid by Ford Motor Company for car theft claims made against them by other drivers while parked at Timmons' garage during prohibition era motorcycle races at nearby Canandaigua Speedway! The area that is now Massapequa Park was first settled by the Lenape people in the early 17th century. The area was named for Oneida Chief Massapequa. In 1689, the English colonists founded a small village on the site which they named Colchester after their trading partner, Christopher Stuyvesant. The village grew rapidly and by 1715 it had a population of 150. However, due to its remote location and lack of resources, Colchester struggled to maintain any kind of infrastructure or social order. By 1720, however, Colchester had developed into a thriving community with a school and church. In 1725, English colonists founded West Point on the same land as Colchester. West Point became one of the most important military posts in New York during the early 1800s because it served as an intermediary between British troops and Indian allies fighting against French forces in North America. After years of struggle and Siege at Fort Niagara (1756-1759), English soldiers eventually drove French out of Canada in 1814 thanks to support from American General George Washington. Because of this victory over France, England ceded control of North America to France instead; however, Queen Victoria granted United States independence in 1821 which allowed for continued trade with Canada so business opportunities emerged for both countries. During these years, Massapequa Park also saw some significant development including construction of roads and other infrastructure such as schools and churches. In 1892-93 massachusetts-born architect Charles Bulfinch designed two massive Gothic Revival style homes at 3691–3695 Main Street which are still standing today – they are known as "The Gates." Designed to be grandiose examples of Edwardian architecture and considered period landmarks within the town of Nyackville until they were replaced by more modest dwellings around World War II, these residences remain significantly influential among residents today who tour them occasionally for historical purposes only
