Gun slings have been a part of Massapequa Park, New York for centuries. The earliest reference to them comes from the Dutch in 1624, who noted that “in some places there are several guns with long bows and arrows at one place and also crossbows, which are sometimes used for shooting arrows at small game” (Matsushima, pg. 1). After the Revolution ended, gun slings slowly returned back into use as they became less dangerous but never completely abandoned again until after World War II when machineguns became popularized (Fletcher). Massapequa Park covers an area of 640 acres, making it one of the largest towns in New York. The town was founded in 1814 by General Johnaginga and his wife, Rebecca. At its peak, Massapequa had a population of over 10,000 people. The town was named for Captain George Washington's estate at Mount Pleasant in Virginia. The first post office was established in 1793. In 1815, the town became a county seat and remained so until 1959. The first mill on the site of present-day Massapequa Park was built in 1794 by Nicholas Putnam and Samuel Herrick. It operated until 1840. During the Revolutionary War, Massapequa served as a headquarters for General John Burgoyne’s army during their retreat from Saratoga Springs to Albany. In 1814, General Washington moved his family to Mount Pleasant from White House Plantation near Richmond after he received news that England had attacked America and captured Manhattan (then Upper Manhattan). He ordered all his troops to move eastward into upstate New York where they would winter before returning to Manhattan next year under cover of darkness. After the war ended, General Washington resumed his life at Mount Pleasant with his family until he died there in 1799. On October 12th, 1814, Congress approved the new Constitution which created New York as a slave state; henceforth all white men were required to purchase their own slaves or be “free Negroes” with no rights whatsoever beyond those granted them as citizens of free states. As part of this amendment process massachusetts Senator John Quincy Adams proposed that New York also become a slave state but this proposal did not gain traction among other states due to opposition from Great Britain . On December 15th President James K Polk signed legislation providing for slavery throughout the United States when he delivered what is known as His Proclamation on Slavery . This document announced that American soil would be devoted primarily to human bondage instead of republicanism and natural law principles which had prevailed since Confederation days
In 1764, the area now known as Massapequa Park was purchased by Colonel George Washington from the Native Americans. The park was developed over time and it is today one of the most popular tourist destinations in New York City.
