In 1684, the Dutch founded New Netherland and named it Massapequa Park after their friend and mentor, Emperor of China, Theodoricus Maeda. The area today known as Massapequa Park was part of the town of Hempstead until 1811. In that year, the town was annexed by New York City. The first white settlers in what is now Massapequa Park were Nicholas Putnam and his family in 1777. They arrived on a boat from Connecticut with three others. soon they started to farm land near present day Oneida Lake and built a cabin which still stands today. Putnam's descendants continued to live in the park until 1918 when they sold their property to John Prentice who also organized and ran the First Congregational Church in Massapequa Park from its beginning until 1935. In 1814, representatives of both New York State and Albany met at Fort Greene to negotiate land transfers within the newly formed United States of America. After discussions among both sides, it was decided that Epaphras White would transfer 375 acres (190 ha) of his adjoining farm lot at Hempstead for the use of a public school which would be called "New Netherland Institute" later renamed "Massapequa Academy". This parcel became known as Green-Wood Cemetery because many charred remains still remain from when this plantation was burned down during an Indian raid in 1814. White died in 1821 without leaving any children so his estate passed through several hands before being bought by George Washington Smith in 1865 who donated it to Westchester County for use as a county park known as "Massapequa Park". During World War II much of the wooded acreage aroundpresent day Oneida Lake was used for military purposes due to its strategic importance located between two major highways connecting New York City with points southward
The town of Massapequa was founded in 1767 by the Dutch. The first house was built on what is now Route 11 in 1768. In 1814, the town was renamed after General George Washington and it became a borough in 1834. The borough merged with Nassau County in 1898, and it became an open-air county park in 1916. In 1958, the town voted to become an independent city, and it adopted its current name on July 1, 1958.
