One such gunsmith, John Stevens, patented his own lighted gun sight in 1816. This device allowed shooters to see their targets more easily when hunting at night. The design featured three round lucite disks that could be rotated to indicate the direction of fire. These devices were quite popular and quickly became known as " Stevens guns." While many features are unique to each community within which it exists, there has always been an emphasis on creating a safe environment for residents and visitors alike. This includes efforts to ensure that parks are open 24/7, providing access to emergency services should something happen at any of their properties, as well as working towards developing policies that help keep crime rates low in particular areas of the park. In 1812, John Randolph bought two hundred acres of land in what is now Massapequa Park from Nicholas Vail and laid out a plantation called Randolph's Landing on Long Island Sound. Randolph became one of the wealthiest men in New York state and built a large mansion there known as Randolph's Castle. He also donated land to Stuyvesant High School and Trinity Episcopal Church in Massapeqa Park. Reverend Moses Morton, pastor at Trinity Episcopal Church from 1827 until his death in 1861, is credited with developing the parkland around which today stands much of modern-day MassapequaPark.
The first Europeans to visit the area were the Dutch in 1624 and they named it "Massapequa" after an island in the region. The English colonized this area in 1664 and called it "Montauk". In 1764, George Washington founded Mount Vernon and upon its establishment, he named it after his father, George Washington Sr. The town of Montauk was abandoned by the English because of a lack of resources and it reverted back to Indian control in 1802. In 1814, Ulysses S. Grant became president of the United States and he made Montauk an important port on Long Island Sound. He also developed nearby Massapequa Park as a recreational spot for Americans. In 1916, Congress designated Mount Vernon as a national monument which included land around it that had been owned by the Indians since before their removal from here. In 1951, Montauk became part of New York City while remaining an independent municipality with its own government and school system. Today, tourism is one of the most important industries in Montauk Village while also providing valuable educational opportunities for students who reside there
