On April 14, 1795, General George Clinton and his army reached the borders of present-day New York. Two days later, he issued a proclamation inviting all citizens to band together and resist the British invaders. The following day, more than 10,000 men from throughout the region gathered at Massapequa Park on Long Island to form an irregular militia. Over the next few weeks, they took note of British movements and prepared for battle. On July 12th, when orders arrived to march out to battle, only a handful of soldiers remained at Massapequa Park. The majority chose instead to retire home for lack of supplies or reinforcements. The Battle of Saratoga was fought four days later and resulted in a French victory that allowed Britain to enter North America; however, Massapequa Park was not captured by the British as intended.
