As a result many residents moved to Long Island City or Manhattan during that time period; however most residents returned home after the war ended and continued to live in Massapequa until 1960 when it became an incorporated town once again. A post office operated at Massapequa from 1836 to 1860; it was renamed Amityville after Amityville Lake near Nyack NYtowns original location as well as because some early settlers there had been friendly with Indians living on Indian Hill (now Westport)). From 1870 through 1903 there was also an agricultural school located here for white children until total enrollment dropped below 50 students due to lack of space and interest among the black community then began to grow back strongly throughout this time frame with various programs such as gifted scholarships given out while still being open daycare facilities were also opened up for all ages with excellent success becoming one such key factor leading to overall population growth during this time frame before finally closing its doors permanently upon reopening as a modern day high school within recent years now housing advanced technology classes along side vocational certificates/departments available for students who may wish themseves but are not looking for full blown college degrees). A school building which still stands in town today served as the town hall from circa 1850-1875 before being replaced by a new schoolhouse which still stands today across from Beechcroft Manor Drive off Elmhurst Road just east of Main Street (now US Route 9). The first white people to live in Massapequa Park were the Dutch, who arrived in 1624. The area was originally part of New Netherland and was known as "Wappingers Falls". In 1764, the British took over New Netherland and made Massapequa Park their landowning territory. The park was renamed after Sir George Montague (1732-1814), 1st Baronet of Beaconsfield, England. The first Americans to settle in Massapequa Park came from Northern Ireland in 1827. They were indentured workers who had worked on a plantation near Kingston, Jamaica. When their contract expired, they went back to their homes in Northern Ireland but not before taking with them some of the local Native American cultures and artforms. When the United States acquired its independence from Great Britain, it became one of the new nation's first major areas for settlement. In 1828, an act was passed stating that "the town of Hempstead [in Nassau County] shall be formed into a separate body politic and corporate by reason of its peculiar situation on Long Island" and that "the inhabitants thereof shall thenceforth be called residents of Massapequa Park." This gave rise to the name "Massapequa." This initial development is credited with helping lay the groundwork for what would become today's massachusetts Avenue corridor – a commercial artery running through central Nassau County that still bears this moniker today.
