The original Massapequa Park, located in the town of Massapequa on Long Island, was established in 1812. The park was named for General George Washington's estate on the same island. The first public use of the land that now makes up Massapequa Park occurred in 1827 when a tract of land adjoining present-day Central Park was set aside for a military academy. In 1862, part of what is now Park Square was purchased by the town and it became an open space with a pond and playground. In 1875, additional land east of Central Park was acquired to create what is today East Meadow. In 1896, further acreage northeast of Central Park was bought and designated as South Field at Masapequa Lake after being donated by Andrew Carnegie. The area eventually became home to baseball, lacrosse, hockey and other sports facilities before being sold to the state in 1922 for $2 million. In 1933, much of the old athletic fields were demolished to make way for the current tennis courts and pool complex that stands today. On July 16th 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his dedication speech at Masapequa Lakeside Golf Club which included remarks about how much progress had been made since he had last visited here during his earlier term as president less than two years earlier: "I am proud to be associated with this great community whose institutions have played so important a role in helping us meet our most pressing problems." The following year saw increased development around Masapexa Playground when work began on apprehending Verrazano-Narrows Bridge construction workers who had stranded themselves along Nassau County lines whileassembling their equipment near Uniondale NY; they were later found not guilty by reason of insanity and released back into society without any penalty or imprisonment however some managed still to cause property damage (euphemistically called "community service"). On October 3rd 1940 New York State Governor Thomas Dewey announced plans for an ambitious road project known as Route 9 through central Massapequa; it would eventually become Interstates 95A&95B & bring many jobs and new homes including one large factory complex built adjacent to Centenary Village which remains an active commercial center today; also located nearby are several smaller factories operated by local companies such as PepsiCo., Coca ColaCo., IBM & Ford Motor Company among others
