The town of Massapequa Park, New York is located in Nassau County and has a population of over 100,000. The name Massapequa comes from the Mohawk word "massek" meaning "to trade." The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. In 1814, the United States acquired land in what is now Massapequa Park from Great Britain. The first house was built in what is now the Massequotuck River Valley area. In 1876, the village of Massapequa was established around a school and grocery store. In 1916, the village merged with neighboring Hyde Park to form the present-day town of Massapequa Park. In 1984, all villages withinMassapeqaPark were integrated into one municipality called Hyde Park-MassapequaPark. Today, locals still refer to both towns as separate entities but they are more commonly known as MassAPEQA (the two towns combined). The history of massAPEQUA goes back to 1624 when Dutch colonists arrived in what is now Massapequa Park from Holland.. Over time they interacted with various Native American groups and formed trading relationships that would last until 1764 when tensions arose between the English and Dutch colonists over fishing rights on Long Island Sound. As a result of this conflict, several Dutch settlers were killed along with their families during an attack by local Indian tribes on December 1st., 1624 which led to retaliatory raids against English settlements throughout mainland New Netherland including those at Maspeth and Hempstead.. A company of 300 men under command of Lieutenant Colonel Hendrick Block attacked these raiders while they were landing at Maspeth on December 1st., 1624 and carried off their supplies amounting to about £600 sterling… Block's success inspired him to establish himself as an independent leader among his fellow Natives and he soon became known as “Hendrick Hudson” after taking up arms against English colonialism.. In fact, many early settler leaders such as Hudson were self-taught hunters who learned how to use firearms while living amongNative Americans before moving onto European soil where they began exploiting lands owned by indigenous nations…. By 1700 most Native Americans had been removed or killed off across much of North America leaving only a handful remaining scattered throughout central New Netherland including those at Maspeth Bayou where Tryon & Beebe erected their home some years later….. When Captain John Smith reached Long Island Sound in 1714 he discovered large bodies Of Fish washing up on shoreline which prompted him to dub this bodyof water “New York Bay”…… After Smith's visit many natives relocated eastward along river systems such as Mohawk Path (now Roosevelt Road) towards Albany & then Buffalo…. Numerous small communities developed near bayous like Deerpark/Wadsworth Landing/Edgecumbe beginning about 1800……………. By 1800 there remained only a few isolated Native American remnants located primarily along eastern Long Island Sound......... Continued conflict erupted between British colonial authorities seeking exclusive access for fur traders & tribal nations resisting encroachments culminating in 1763 Battle Of Saratoga when Colonial forces defeated 350 indigenous warriors under Chief Joseph Brant…… On July 4th., 1777 General George Washington landed his army at Kingston Ferry intending march southward via Newtown Creek towards Stony Point…… However duetrackside events caused by Heavy rains necessitated diversionary operations leading Washington & his army instead southwesterly via Saybrook Harbor past Horseheads Mountains concurrent with British military retreat thru Queens County....... At Kingsbridge Bridge near Newtown creek junction Washington Orders His field officers To cross Newtown Creek Unopposed…………………………………………………………………………….. According WASHINGTON: “And I bequeath you my sword And Hessian Boots [sic] Which I hope will Pluck out some Trouble Among them That may Occur From This Cause”………………….. The first park opened to the public in 1907 and it was called simply "Macdonald Park." The first permanent home for the National Guard was built on Long Island in 1912 and it served as barracks until 1942 when they were moved to Sayville. During World War II, Massapequa Park played host to an airfield used by American military forces during the war. After hostilities ended, Massapequa Park reverted back to its original name in 1945. Since then, there have been many updates and improvements made to the park including new playgrounds, tennis courts, disc golf courses, a skatepark and more! Today'sMassapequa Park is one of Crown Heights' most popular tourist attractions with over 1 million visitors per year!
