Mamaroneck is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 11,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Mamaroneck was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1494. He named it after his brother Ambrogio (Ambrógus), captain of a Portuguese ship that had been wrecked on the coast of what is now Rockland County. Mamaroneck came into being as one of several villages around Lake George formed from land grants by General John Montgomery in 1824 and 1828. The village began to grow rapidly due to its location near two major transportation routes: the Erie Canal and NY State Route 805, which connected Albany with Schenectady and Perth Amboy, New Jersey. By 1840, Mamaroneck had over 100 residents and was known for its potters' wheel, cheese factory, flour mill, sawmills and blacksmith shops. Asrock Flour Mill became one of the largest mills in America when it opened in 1847. This mill manufactured flour for food markets all over North America including Boston and New York City. In 1861-1862 construction began on Mohawk Road (later US 9) which linked Mamaroneck with Schenectady through what is now Cohoes Township; this structure remains an important route today connecting these twin cities despite having been destroyed by a fire in 1945. During World War II many factories were located within or close to Mamaroneck including Weyerhaeuser Paper Company's paper processing plants which produced tens of thousands of tons of paper annually; Allied Signal's electronic equipment manufacturing facilities which produced radar antennas, gun sights and other electronics; Emerson Electric's television broadcasting plant which built sets for stations such as CBS Radio; Ford Motor Company's assembly line for their trucks and cars; Pierpont Morgan Trust company headquarters where top executives met with Franklin D Roosevelt during his presidency; candy manufacturer Pillsbury who made millions from sales of chocolates exported to Europe throughout World War II In recent years there has been significant development take place within Mamaroneck including new housing developments such as Tanglewood Manor/Tanglewood Village - a planned community developed adjacent to Interstate 87 between Elmiraqua Avenue (the original main street) and White Plains Rd./Route 95A service area west of I-87 - while older residential areas have seen changes such as Oneida Place - a luxury apartment complex completed adjacent to I-87 just east of downtown - becoming popular among high end status Jews living nearby various professional centers like SUNY Polytechnic School Of Engineering And Technology (formerly State University at Westchester) located across I-87 from Oneida Place making it possible for students studying engineering & technology fields near downtown Buffalo & Rochester without having any commute time penalty

Mamaroneck is a small, independent town in upstate New York, located on the border of Orange and Sullivan counties. The population was 5,526 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Erie County, New York region since 1824. The first people to inhabit what is now Mamaroneck were Algonquian-speaking Sachemis and their descendants from western Ontario. They came downriver in canoes in search of salmon and other aquatic resources. In 1664, the Dutch founded a trading post on the east bank of the Mohawk River opposite present-day Mamaroneck. The Dutch name for this location was Westzandt (West Point). A land grant from King George III to Isaac Watts in 1785 gave Mamaroneck its present name: "Mamaroneck". Watts had come over as an indentured servant with his family in 1784 and purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) along East Main Street from Nicholas Hanna. He built a house there which still stands today. In 1824, Erie County was created from parts of Albany and Montgomery Counties; Mamaroneck became one of its first townships. The town's charter was granted on October 15, 1825; it had a population of 2200 at that time. On November 3rd, 1830 – less than two years after incorporation – Mamaroneick militia company #2 disbanded because it could not agree among itself who should be its commander during inter-town warfare exercises being staged by county officials at Newtown Lake near Rochester airport. A committee appointed by the Township Committee consisted of John Fenton (owner/operator), John Smedley (builder), James Glynn (founder/director), Solomon Sheppard (editor/publisher), Ebenezer Weeden (artist), Amos Whitehead (ctor) and Harry Wellerfelt trustees for school district No.–1 which included both Ridgway Valley School District No.–1 which extended into Orange County across Cuyahoga River between Mentor Road and Greater Cleveland Avenue just north of Ridge Road–the area around present day Camp Hill Rd.–and also Herkimer Valley School District No.–3 which encompassed much of what is now Monroe County including all or most current territory eastward from Beaver Dam Creek including numerous homes on Turtle Pond commonly known as Herkimer Lake before white settlement began scouring it for long Bottomland trees about four miles wide lying along Cherry Run creek then extending downslope towards where it enters Catskill National Forest today’s Amherst Corners state park entrance road leading southeast from Route 9 northeast pastOswego Castle State Park entrance road to end up at US Military Academy Preparatory School driveway close to US Military Academy Museum
