Mamaroneck, New York is a small town located in Rockland County, New York. The town was formed from the merger of two villages, Mamaroneck and Great Neck. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mamaroneck were Dutch traders who sailed up the Hudson River in 1624. They named the area Northamptonshire after one of their holdings in England. In 1715, General James Clinton moved his headquarters from Saratoga to nearby Westchester County and founded what would become Mamaroneck on August 12th of that year as a new post for soldiers stationed there during the American Revolution. The village's name comes from the Massachusett word "mamaronesque," meaning "a kind of apple." It wasn't until 1836 that an iron works and locomotive factory were built in Mamaroneck by Nicholas Warburg and Company. This led to increased wealth for the townspeople and helped contribute to its growth over time. Nowadays, Mamaroneck is known for its Renaissance-era architecture which can be seen throughout many buildings such as its Parish Hall (1775), State House (1837), and United States courthouse (1903). Mamaroneck, New York is a small town located in upstate New York. The population of the town was 9,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of Erie County and is northeast of Buffalo. The first permanent settler in what would become Mamaroneck was Nicholas de Salis (1568-1629), an Italian immigrant who came to America in 1585 with his family. De Salis married Mary Decker, daughter of Nicholas Decker, one of the founders of Buffalo. They had four children: Nicholas (baptized 1602-30), John (1604-59), Margaret (baptized 1606-14) and Susanna (1608-93). In 1647, two brothers named Jacob and Matthias DeSalis purchased some land north of Mamaroneck from Nicholas Decker for $1,000. This initial parcel became known as The Mountain because it stood on high ground overlooking the village center. The name may have been derived from a story about a giant meadow mouse who lived there until being chased away by a farmer during wintertime. Jacob and Matthias developed this land into what is now Mamaroneck Township by planting maize, wheat and other vegetables crops and building stockades around their fields to protect them from Native American raiders. By 1774 all but one block in the township had been planted with corn! The development of mills around this time helped increase production within Mamaroneck Township, which grew rich through its agricultural production over the years. However, although it enjoyed economic prosperity throughout most of its history, Mamaroneck has seen periodic decline in population over recent decades due to increased commutingdistance to larger cities or lack thereof within commuting distance for many residents; making it difficult for families to maintain close ties both inside and outside their community despite shared cultural experiences and traditions
Mamaroneck is a hamlet in upstate New York, east of Rochester on the border of Monroe County and Ontario County. It is located at the junction of Rte. 9 and Rte. 119, about northwest of Syracuse. Mamaroneck was first settled in 1786 by John Mamaronecki and his family as part of the claims to land given by Sir George Clinton to Lieutenant-Governor James Reynolds in 1785. By 1812, all but one house on the original town site had been destroyed by fire or other natural disaster; however, most of the remaining buildings were reconstructed between 1815 and 1830 using Federalist style architecture which characterized much of the area until that time. The town site was annexed by Rochester in 1836, becoming part of that city's limits after Rochester's incorporation as a village in 1865. In 1870, when Buffalo became an incorporated city, Mamaroneck became its first ward; it remained so until 1975 when it was consolidated with neighboring Parkville into Buffalo Township (later renamed Erie Township). In 1984, Erie Township was dissolved and its lands became part of Niagara County while Parkville continued to be under municipal control until 1999 when it too became an incorporated city.
