Mamaroneck, New York is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 8,997 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The first Europeans to visit the area were Dutch traders and missionaries in 1624-25. English settlers arrived in 1686 as part of the English East India Company's effort to extend British rule over all of India. In 1764, George Washington passed through Mamaroneck on his way to battle the French at Saratoga. In 1810, Mamaroneck became a village and was incorporated as a town by an act of the New York State Legislature on February 14, 1811. Its first mayor was Gideon Welles. The name derived from "mamacook," meaning "a black bear." After years of growth and development within the limits set by its charter, Mamaroneck achieved city status on July 1st 1923 when it joined with other towns located in Westchester County (Brooklyn and Yonkers) for what is now known as the Brooklyn–Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area (BNYCMA). On April 12th 1927 Mayor John P Farrell announced that all towns within BNYCMA had been given their own constitutions which would “define their powers and rights” with respect to each other while continuing “to work together for general purposes” including providing services such as firefighting and policing; however this continued only until December 5th 1927 when Brooklyn withdrew from BNYCMA effective January 1st 1928 due to financial reasons related to its large size alone relative to other municipalities within it.
