Mamaroneck, New York is a small town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Mamaroneck was first settled in 1792 by Nicholas Biddle and his family from Norwich, England. They named their property "Mamaroneck", after the Manor of Marmornek in Flanders where they had been born and brought up. In 1814, John Barker bought land adjoining what is now Mamaroneck Village from Nicholas Biddle and began to sell Lots 1-3 for $5 each. By 1828, all of Barker's lots had been sold and all that remain today are Lot 4-6 which comprise most of the village center. Mamaroneck developed as a small town with a single storey schoolhouse on Main Street and several residences around it until about 1830 when some residents built a two-story brick courthouse near the present day post office building (then known as Government House). This courthouse served as both court house and jail until 1857 when it burned down during an arson spree by local farmers who believed that Congress had ordered its destruction because it opposed their efforts to reprint the colonial charter which they claimed represented fraudulence on the part of New York State government officials. The new courthouse was completed in 1861 but never used because it proved too heavy to move around due to its stone construction; instead, it sat empty until 1975 when it was donated to the state for use as a museum inside the new Department of Motor Vehicles headquarters complex located across from First Congregational Church on High Street in Mamaroneck Village. The main business district within Mamaronecks borders are centered around North Avenue between Main Street (west side) and Third Avenue (east side), South Avenue between Second Avenue (north side) and Fourth Avenue (south side), East River Road between Third Avenue (east side) and Fifth Avenue (west side), Vinegar Hill Road between Fourth Avenue (south side) and Sixth Ave., while along South River Road there are several smaller businesses like Smith’s Variety Store, Goldsmith’s drugstore/grocery store/cakery etc., procter & Gamble factory #1 & 2 opposite Seventh Ave., Haggerty’s bakery/cake shop etc., Hardware Plus!, Ford dealership etc.. In 1916 local banker Edward Mudgett erected one of America's first skyscrapers – OneWest Building – just west of Vinegar Hill Rd./ Sixth Ave./High St./Mamaroneck Village begun 1906 high rise growth stopped in late 1920s with only 3 stories high
