Mamaroneck, New York is a small town in westchester county, New York. The population was 5,235 at the 2010 census and 5,868 as of the 2017 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls-onia micropolitan area. The name comes from the Mohawk word "mamaronek", meaning "a place where one can go fishing." The first settler in what is now Mamaroneck was Dutchman Hendrick Vander Velde. He built a cabin on a hill overlooking the Hudson River in 1785. Other early settlers included Christopher Batchelder, Augustijn van der Laan, Nicholas Voorhees and Pieter Janszoon Piscataway. In 1814, Abraham Van Schaik bought land east of Mamaroneck from Vander Velde for $2 per acre. He built a gristmill on the current site of Old Mamaroneck Village and named it after his father-in-law Cornelius Hennepin (1731-1812). In 1821, John Rensselaer bought four thousand acres north of Mamaroneck from Vander Velde for $5 per acre. He named it after his brother Govind Ranald Macdonald (1764-1837), Governor General of Canada during the period when Ontario was administered by Britain as part of her North America colony. Annexed by New York in 1827 following its admission to Confederation as Canada, this land became known as Upper Manhattan. After Ranald's death in 1837, it passed through several hands before being acquired by George Clinton (1767-1845) in 1840 who sold it tothe American Fur Company for £60 000 ($210 000 today). A second mill was built at this location by Jabez Bird between 1843 and 1850; this mill produced flour that went into local stores such as Johnsons & Majors and Wigglesworth & Sons grocery stores which were also located along Main Street until they closed around 1915 because there wasn’t enough demand for flour anymore due to railroad construction nearby A post office called West Seneca opened in 1865; however mail delivery stopped because of regulation at that time requiring an office within two miles of every populated center . A school opened here on October 25th 1870 under direction of Reverend Augustus Kelley with teacher training starting January 1st 1871 . Classes continued until November 15th 1971 due to lack of space . An academy followed suit but classes were discontinued again on December 12th 1972 due to budget cuts
