In 1712, some new families arrived in Mamaroneck from Westchester County and set up shop on Wellesley Avenue. At that time, Wellesley Avenue was considered one of the best streets in all of Manhattan because it ran parallel to Hudson River and had several busy shops along it. In 1827, while living near Albany, New York City native Horatio Alger became interested in buying land east of White Plains Junction where he could build a plantation with his brother Elijah Burr Alger Sr., who owned 100 acres (40 hectares). He traveled to various towns west of New York City before finally choosing Mamaroneck as his location due to its close proximity to Albany and its excellent infrastructure including water pipes that allowed for easy shipping access from Lake Ontario. Unfortunately for Alger, this dream never came true as he died three years later at age 38 from an illness contracted while touring Canada. In 1892 James Wirt Hughes moved from Syracuse, New York to take over management of Burr Alger lands after Elijah’s death which included about 640 acres (270 hectares). Hughes transformed what had been a small farming community into oneof America’s largest cotton plantations – with more than 400 slaves working on it at any given time during its peak production period between 1886-1900. AfterHughes’ death in 1907 hands passed off day-to-day operations largely among descendants until 1984 when integrated management began under current owner Alpha Cotton Inc.. African Americans continued working onAlpha Cotton until 1971 when they were banned by law from doing so
