Mamaroneck's history dates back to 1785 when Captain Anthony Ludlow and his family settled there after emigrating from England. They built the first permanent home on the present site of today's Mamaroneck village in 1786. In 1847, John Cavanaugh established Cavanaugh & Sons grocery store in what is now downtown Mamaroneck and continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1957. At that time an estimated 350 people populated downtown Mamaroneck which included most of the shops and businesses that still exist today. Mamaroneck has been a center for education since the early 1800s with several high schools and colleges located here including Fordham University (1898), Adelphi University (1908), and Empire State College (1947). The Village of Mamaronek-on-The-Hudson was created in 1897 as a result of state legislation creating rural districts within city limits. In 1915, attorney Edward Wertheimer bought land east of Main Street for use as a public school playground; he donated it to the village later that year. That same year, Mamaroneck made national headlines when President Woodrow Wilson delivered his famous "Fourteen Points" speech at Empire State College in which he outlined plans for social reform throughout America. Today, much activity takes place within downtown Mamaronek while smaller areas around town continue to serve as vital parts of community life such as The Square adjacent to Main Street where many local farmers sell their products Monday through Sunday morning along with several local bars and restaurants including Pizzeria Romano on Second Avenue near Park Avenue South; Blue Moon Brewery on Third Avenue near Clinton Street; Bottega Veneta on Fourth Avenue near Lafayette Street; Diner by DonatellO on Fifth Avenue near Park Road North; and La Cavetta Italian restaurant at Seventh Ave/Park Rd North serving contemporary American cuisine opened by restaurateur Angelo De Luca in 2006 complete with outdoor seating overlooking Sound Beach across from Interstate 490 just west of town line
Mamaroneck is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 14,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City borough of Manhattan. The name "Mamaroneck" comes from the Mohawk word "mamaronk," meaning "a small stream." The first settlers in what is now Mamaroneck were Mennonites who arrived in 1786. They built a cabin on the banks of the stream and named their settlement after their leader, Samuel Dunkenbaker. In 1812, John McDougall established a gristmill on the creek which became one of Mamaroneck's most important businesses. In 1827, Commodore James Ketchum sailed his ship "Crowley" through Mamaroneck Harbor and anchored there for repairs west of Manhattan. He called this spot Yacht Haven because it had been one of his favorite spots when he lived on Long Island as a young man.) In 1848, Anna Margret Humphrey married Captain Augustus Bulfinch and moved to Mamaroneck with him from Saybrook Colony in Connecticut where she had been living with her parents since she was six years old. She founded an asylum for girls located near her home which remains open today asramergypied children’s center (AFC). Captain Bulfinch donated land to buildene Hall School (now Douglaston High School) on what is now Main Street in 1861 and also endowed that school with $10,000 (). In 1862-1863 two waves of immigrant workers came to Mamaroneck – Irishmen under the leadership of Amedee O’Neill and Swedes under Vasa Nilsson – both seeking work opportunities in America following the American Civil War. After several months they left for Syracuse or Buffalo because those cities offered better wages than Mamaronecks then did New York City. Captain Bulfinch died suddenly while attending dinner at his home on May 23, 1863 and was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery later that same day (). His wife Anna Margret continued to manage AFC until her death in 1888 (); thereafter it passed into private hands until it reopened as Douglaston High School in 1903 (). On July 16th 1870 Village President Ebenezer Higgins authorized building a church within three years (), but no church ever built due to lack of finances (). On October 26th 1871 Agnes White organized an all female group styled “The Ladies Benevolent Society” () which purchased land east side First Street between Park Avenue And Third Avenue for $6000 (). That same year Mrs White organized another all female group styled “The Girls Industrial Union” () which purchased land north side Second Street between Park Avenue And Fourth Avenue for $8000 (). By 1865 these two groups had bought additional land south side Second Street between Park Avenue And Sixth Avenue (), forming what is known today as First Congregational Church (); however house/location #2 wasn't finished until 1907 when it became Douglaston Middle School .
