Lynbrook is located in the Town of Lynbrook on the border of Westchester and New York counties. It was founded by Nicholas Lynbrook in 1775 as a trading post on the Mohawk River. The town was renamed after General George Washington in 1821. As an agricultural community, Lynbrook produced some of the most important grain crops in the United States during the early nineteenth century including wheat, oats, and rye. In 1824, John French bought 1,500 acres (4 km²) of land from Daniel Chandler for $10 per acre. John Fenton purchased 3,000 acres (10 km²) of land from George Miller in 1830 for $25 per acre. In 1835, David Rice founded a gristmill on the east side of town and began milling flour which he exporting to Buffalo and other cities across Canada until 1847 when he got into trouble with the government over taxes. He sold his mill to John Fenton who continued to operate it until 1860 when it burned down due to an engine failure while being used for storage purposes.
