Lynbrook, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. It has a population of about 12,000 people and covers an area of just over onesquaremile. The town was founded in 1854 by farmers who moved from Onondaga County, New York to the area now comprising Lynbrook. The name "Lynbrook" means "place where the light shines." The first optical instruments made in Lynbrook were watchmakers' tools used to measure time and make watches. In 1865, two brothers named Edward Crouse bought a farm on which they built a sawmill and grist mill. They began making lens cloth for microscopes and other scientific equipment as well as lenses for telescopes and other optical devices. A few years later they started manufacturing eyeglasses, which became very popular because of their protection from the sun's harmful rays. In 1892, three men named George Eastman, Charles Babbage, and Augustus Saint John bought the mills from Crouse's brother-in-law. They began making American glass products such as windows and mirrors using traditional methods including blowing into thin sheets with hot air or firing molten glass at high temperatures under pressure. Their new company quickly became very successful and soon dominated the market for optical products in America. In 1924 they merged with another company to form United States Glass Company (USG).
