The Village of Lynbrook was formed from part of Westfield on November 3, 1869. The first settler in what would become Lynbrook was George Turnbull who had crossed over from Canada in 1825. He purchased land east ofpresent-day Route 9 and built a log cabin which he called "New Home". In 1871, Turnbull donated to the Village his home which still stands today as community hall. In 1870, Russel & Associates bought some additional parcels from Turnbull for $5 per acre and began to develop them into what would become Lynbrook Township. On December 12th 1870, they laid out streets in what became known as "Old Town" and developed three blocks southward along present day Main Street between Third Avenue (now Sixth Avenue) and Fourth Avenue (now Fifth Avenue). This area now includes most of downtown Lynbrook as well as several smaller neighborhoods including Eastown, Northwest Side (northwest corner of Third Avenue/Eastown), Southtowne Heights (southwest corner of Fourth Avenue/Southtowne Heights), and Westfield north side extending to First Street/Route 9W near Intersection with Routes 27A & 27B . It should be noted that at this time there were no street grids - all roads were numbered starting at 1st Streets westward! On July 1st 1872 Russel sold their holdings back to the original owners for $6 per acre after years OF development play!. At this time Old Town consisted of just six homes - four on Main Street between Third Ave./Fourth Ave., another two off Third Ave./Eastown Boulevard and one off First St./Route 9W! These early settlers were soon followed by others who arrived beginning in earnest during the late 1800s with many more homes being built throughtout what became known as "NewTown". By 1902 there were over 100 homes in Lynbrook Township! Some other notable events during this time include:* On October 15th 1898 James Wirtz Sr., Judge Advocate General for Militia Corps stationed at Fort Wagner transferred ownershipof his home at 309 Broadway St..(later to become 511 Broadway St.) from his father James WirtzJr.* On January 14th 1899 Mrs Jane Dodge moved into her new house at 4500 Maple Road from her previous residence on Elmhurst Drive (* later renamed Maple Road House*) due to an illness her husband contracted while serving abroad with our military * Mrs Jane Dodge died suddenly one week later without having seen her new house live *On February 2nd 1899 Mrs Elizabeth French moved into her newly furnished home at 5601 Maple Road from her previous residence on Mahopac Drive(*later renamed Paris Rd.) due to an illness she contracted while living on Wallkill Lake* After spending several weeks unoccupied Mrs Elizabeth France obtained possessionofhernewhomeonFebruary9TH 1899*. It can be assumed that because both Mrs Jane Dodge's house ANDMrs Elizabeth French's newhousewerefurnished WITH ALL THE EQUIPMENT THAT WAS SUPPLIED BY RUSSELL & ASSOCIATES WHEN THEY INVENTED THE STREET NUMBERING SYSTEM IN LYNBROOK TOWARD THIS TIME*, THAT THESE TWO HOMES BELONG TO THE SAME PERSON!

The economy of Lynbrook is based on agriculture with a significant amount of apple orchards and other fruit trees as well as cattle and sheep ranching; however, lynx were reintroduced into the area in 2002 after living near Prospect Park for centuries. In 1842 Colburn bought some land from the Dutchman Cornelius Kieft who had been granted it by King George IV on his orders following his victory over Lord Stirling at Saratoga Creek (now known as Long Island Sound). After purchasing this land he renamed it "Lynbrook" after his mother's birthplace in Germany. Most Lynbrook residents lived within a few miles of their homes until eventually moving out to larger towns around New York City during World War II because housing prices soared during that time period. Many villagers returned home during the war years when property values plummeted due to rationing Glass et al., 2004).
