Lynbrook, New York was founded in 1892 by George W. Aiken and his wife, Jane. The town is located on the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes region and is bordered by Ontario to the north, Pennsylvania to the east, and Lake Erie to the south. Lynbrook is a small town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The Town of Lynbrook was first settled in 1792 by Adam and Jane Livingston. The name of the village derives from areek Lyndbrook meaning "a stream that flows through woods." In 1825, Phebe Snively bought part of what is now Lynbrook Village from Abram Nordenfeldt and renamed it after herself. In 1827, Anna Maria Childs founded a school in what is now Lynbrook Village and named it after her sister-in-law, Eleanor Roosevelt. That same year, the town had its first post office and residents voted to incorporate as a village. In 1828, Anna Maria Childs donated land for a public square which became home to many local businesses including an opera house and later also to the county courthouse which still stands today. The village rapidly grew due to its close proximity to Syracuse and its many churches as well as its rich agricultural history dating back to when large tracts were given away free for growing crops on Long Island Sound. The growth of Lynbrook led to development within the limits of the original planned village with more than twenty homes built between 1830 and 1840 alone; much later this number would grow even further with subdivision throughout eras until reaching over two thousand residences by 1960 according to government records. One significant event during this early period related toLynbrook's growth was when John Graves Simcoe donated eighty acres (30 hectares) along Sycamore Avenue in 1836 for use as farmland for his new political precinct known as Clinton Township; all subsequent purchases from Simcoe have been used for agricultural purposes or are still extant today within present day Lynbrook Village boundaries
