It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Lynbrook was Nicholas Mathers in 1806. He bought land from the Mohawk tribe for $2 per acre. In 1825, Daniel Snyder donated 50 acres (20 hectares) to the town for a public school and graveyard. A post office was established at Lynbrook in 1827, and it increased its population by 10 percent every year until 1850 when it reached its peak with 120 residents. However, by 1860, Lynbrook's economy had declined due to an increase in agriculture products available outside of New York City; primarily flour from Canada and lead found near Niagara Falls which could be sold only within New York City limits at that time. In 1865, Mayor John Wirtz enacted a law limiting new settlers to one family each and ordering all other township officials to reduce their populations except those who owned 30 or more acres (12 hectares). This decision resulted in a decrease in population from 220 to 210 people over six years while also decreasing property values because most farmers were unable to expand into newer areas due to prohibitive zoning laws at that time. In 1870-71 Lynbrook received a gift of 352 acres (168 hectares) from General Nelson Acheson which became known as "Achewood", later renamed after his son-in-law Cornelius Vanderbilt III's estate thereabouts. The addition of this tract allowed for significant growth both economically and politically within the community starting around 1870–72 as many businesses opened up including two gristmills, three hotels/motels, four churches and two schools before reaching its heyday by 1910 with 1,500 residents living on 6 square miles (18 km2). However during World War I Norfolk Southern Railway construction stopped briefly cutting off access to much of rural western Broome County so manufacturing shifted eastward towards Buffalo where textiles were woven out of steel wire instead such as airplane parts until these factories closed during late war years when raw materials became scarce across Europe The decline began again following World War II with economic recession then rapid population growth followed by dwindling resources such as farming not being able to keep up with rising needs resulting in high levels of poverty throughout the 1970s through 1980s among others leading some civic leaders likeMayor James Condon calling for secession following High School Dropout rates well above state average despite larger enrollments statewide which caused budget constraints resulting initially in closures but eventually jobs opening up elsewhere including nearby Canandaigua where business opportunities led developers thereto develop an even bigger city now home to over 60K people
