Lynbrook, New York is a small town located in Putnam County, New York. The population was 5,023 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Uniondale-Bedfordtown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun sights were installed in Lynbrook by Captain James Caldwell in 1836. By 1840, the first permanent mounted rifle range had been built and operated by Colonel John Paulding in Lynbrook. In 1843, Captain George Armstrong erected a sawmill on the east side of Bear Creek and began to use his millrace as a firing range for his rifles. In 1865, Major General Wm J. Gettysburg ordered all artillery units within five miles of Philadelphia to be brought up to full strength so that they could fire on Confederate soldiers encamped near Petersburg. Many guns were sent from Lynbrook but no sights were installed because there wasn't enough money available for installation fees. In 1868 Captain William Aiken erected two ranges on land he owned just south of the village square: one for target shooting and one for rifle practice or stagecoach games which continued until 1925 when it was used as an agricultural fairground park by the Village of Valley Stream (now called West Valley). The Arsenal Museum opened its doors in 1911 following years of work by local entrepreneur George Fenton who donated land and funds to create it with plans to display American firearms artifacts from pre-Revolutionary times through World War II. The community first developed around a small mill pond on the east side of present-day Lynbrook Road and its first post office was established in 1872. A sawmill and gristmill were built about 1900, but these are no longer extant. The Town of Lynbrook was organized on February 13, 1892 from parts of the Village of Poughkeepsie with a population of 553. At that time it included all land east of Main Street between Fishkill Creek and Newtown Creek (now known as Westchester County). On May 20, 1907 it annexed the adjoining village of East Northport (now called Vestal) with a population of 603 residents. This annexation created what is now Lynbrook Township; it had an area including most of what is today Lynbrook Road and other smaller streets within its boundaries which totaled 2 square miles or 0.8 square kilometers). The township was divided into two sections – Western Section which includes present-day Lynbrook and Bloomfield until 1940 when they too were annexed by vestal; Eastern Section which consists only of what is now Lynbrook Township proper until 1990 when it also became part of vestal’s section for easy merging purposes due to their common border On July 17th, 1990 all sections within vestal merged together to form one new entity –the Lyndhurst Borough Corporation After more than 25 years as an unincorporated communityLynBrook has become an incorporated town with 1,699 residents

The town grew rapidly and in 1824 it incorporated as a village. By 1850, Lynbrook had a population of 1,000 people and it became an agricultural center with extensive fields of corn and wheat. In 1886, the village acquired its own water system and began to prosper as a commercial center. The economy diversified in the 1990s when new businesses moved into the town from upstate New York; today Lynbrook is known for its wide range of retail businesses including several large stores, two restaurants, two banks, a library, and numerous small shops.
