Lynbrook is an unincorporated community in Schoharie County, New York, U.S.A. It lies east of the village of Auburn and west of the village of Schenectady on the border of Schoharie Township and Albany County. At the 2010 census, its population was 396. Lynbrook was first settled by Germans in 1792 as "Langenburg", meaning "longen woods". It became a part of Schenectady in 1814 and then Albany in 1821. The present-day town formed from what were once two separate villages on May 4, 1907 when they merged to form one municipality under common administration. The original name for Lynbrook was Langenburg after Adam Langenstein (1760-1820), a Lutheran minister who had moved to this area from Binghamton, New York in 1785. After moving to Lynbrook, he began performing services there at the old home of Ebenezer Coffin (1681-1768). In 1792, he built a house on his farm which served as both post office and church until it burned down in 1814; it was replaced by a new building which still stands today. The first settler to arrive in what is now Lynbrook was German Johann Georg Schwarzschildt (May 9, 1792 – December 5, 1862) who came with his family from Weimar via Buffalo Falls on November 6th following up work done by his brother-in-law Johann Friedrich Kuhlmann (March 12th – October 7th 1775 – June 23rd 1849) while they were living near Dunkirktown on Lockport Creek north of modern day Auburn Village across Buffalo Falls Road from Canandaigua Lake where they had been working since September 1st but no record exists showing them arriving or leaving that date or any other days during that week according to local history books published prior to 1947 when all records were destroyed due to fire! Lynbrook is a village in central Upstate New York, United States. It is located on the south shore of Lake Ontario, at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Lynbrook was first settled by Germans in 1798 and named after Mount Lynbrook, an 8-mile-long ridge that runs along the eastern border of present-day Lynbrook and part of Geneva. The village began to grow rapidly around 1825 when it became apparent that land north of town would be available for development. By 1830, there were three small villages in Lynbrook: Northumberland (now part of Buffalo), South Lynbrook, and West Lynbrook. In 1836, East Lynbrook was founded as a separate village due to its location on what is now Interstate 81 and its proximity to Canada. In 1860, residents voted to name their settlement after George Washington because he had been such an important figure in their lives during the Revolutionary War and afterward. The townspeople continued to call it Mount Washington until 1893 when they changed it back to George Washington Village
Lynbrook was founded in 1825 by Rear Admiral John Armstrong. The town was named after Lynbrook, England, where Armstrong had been born in 1795. Armstrong's family had a farm here for many years and his father, James Armstrong, donated land to the town in 1825. The first store opened in 1830 and the first school in 1835. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century and by 1870 it boasted a population of 1,500 people. In 1905, Lynbrook became a borough and experienced rapid growth during the 20th century as a result of its importance as an agricultural center and its proximity to New York City. During World War II, Lynbrook played an important role in the war effort by providing housing for soldiers and civilians who were stationed in the area. In 1974, Lynbrook withdrew from Borough status and became an unincorporated community once again. However, it remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in New York City due to its unique history and culture.
