In 1814, a group of farmers from Wappingers Falls began to clear land for a new parish church on Nowicki Hill (now Mount Hope Cemetery). They named their settlement after Sir Walter Scott's novel "Dracula". The road connecting Lynbrook with Wappingers Falls became known as Scott's Road. In 1825, Samuel Morse founded the first permanent home for his family here when he built their farmstead on present-day Main Street. Lynbrook is a small town in the Town of Geneva in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. It is one of three towns in Ulster County and it is also part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lynbrook was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. The name originated from a stream called "Lyncreek". A post office was established at Lynbrook in 1823, and remained in operation until 1964. In 1827, William Lyon Mackenzie founded the Buffalo and Erie Canal here. His canal allowed for increased trade between Buffalo and Syracuse. In 1835, the village of Lynbrook petitioned to incorporation as a town; this request was denied because its population did not exceed twenty-five people. However, on October 15th of that year, voters approved incorporation via an act of local legislature. The village had an initial population size of about seventy-five people; however, by 1860 it had dwindled to just thirteen residents due largely to increased competition from nearby towns such as Scotia and Geneva (which had become much larger). In 1865, when the Erie Canal was extended through town to make room for it (the first time such a project had been attempted), Lynbrook again petitioned for incorporation but this time were granted with only twelve residents remaining instead of five hundred+. By 1880, most residents had left for other towns within the county or else moved away altogether due to changes brought about byFactorytowns dotting rural America during that period: lynching becoming more popularized as a means of settling disputes; opened businesses taking jobs away from locals; transportation improvements making travel easier and cheaper; railways coming into existence making goods dependency on them instead of locally sourced materials etc.; overall economic decline throughout much rural America resulting in decreasing social support which led many farmers to abandon their land & form large industrial businesses etc.). This made way for developers looking to move into these already less populated areas & start new industries – creating modern day Lynbrook we know today! The Village Green Historic District contains four contributing buildings: two churches - First Presbyterian Church built c 1830 andabletred after 1870 (& now used as a museum)& Second Presbyterian Church completed c 1840; both are Greek Revival style with tall gables rooflines & spindles on pedimented ends - each has three recessed Ionic columns supporting entablature above dresser/case combination wainscot ; one side porch features paired Doric ordercolumns similar design motif found on some late Grecian revival houses elsewhere in NY located near border between NY City limits & Canadan provinces
