By 1900, Lynbrook had become one of the most important communities in Upstate NY due to its strong economy and thriving community spirit. During World War II (1939-1945), Lynbrook played an important role in supporting America's war effort by manufacturing munitions and supplies that went into battle across Europe. Lynbrook is a small town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chenango County. The first European to visit Lynbrook was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. A fort and trading post were built here by the Dutch in 1614 and served as a base for their fur trade operations through this area. The Lenape Native Americans used the area for raiding and hunting among other activities; one account says they killed 200 white settlers on Long Island Sound when they invaded from Canada in 1664. A small community developed around what is now Lynbrook after a group of farmers decided to settle there in 1854 because of the lack of available land elsewhere in the county. The townsite was named after General James Armstrong Lynch, who won an army victory at Saratoga Springs against George Washington's forces on September 17, 1777. Lynbrook became an incorporated village on April 12, 1857; it had a population of 219 people that year. On November 13, 1907, Lynbrook experienced its first tornado outbreak when three tornadoes hit; one killed two people and injured 25 others near the village square before dissipating over Ontario Falls within minutes. In 1960, Lynbrook voted to become part of Utica-Rome-Onondaga County as part of larger regional government changes following New York's admission into the United States as a state on November 8 that year. In 1970, Utica-Rome-Onondaga County merged with another local government entity to form Oneida County which included much of what is now Chenango County including Lynbrook.
