At this time there were only a few hundred human beings living within what is now Nassau County and Hempstead Township included only 4 or 5 miles (6 or 8 km) of any body of water other than Sound Bayou which lay at the eastern terminus of present-day Weehawken Peninsula. Over time much land was acquired by private individuals and organizations through purchases, grants, donations or cessions from others including from John Dutchess Manor on Lake Success Manor on Roosevelt Island; Kingspoint Manor; Montague Street Manor; Millbrook Heights; Garden City Manor No. 2; Beechwood Place No. 2 & No 3 etc., among others - making up today's townships North Hempstead (now Westbury), East Meadow (now Islip), Fresh Meadows (now Sayville), Farmingdale (now Oyster Bay), South Farmingdale (now Babylon). On July 29th 1830 Isaac Weld organized what became called "the long beach boys" who sailed out into SoundBayou with some three hundred men under command to take possessionof all that they could see withoutoug
