In 1815 John Jacob Astor purchased some land adjacent to present-day Long Beach from Captain Benjamin Gaspar de Portocarrero for $5 per acre; however, Astor never developed it as he had hoped due to contrary winds which occasionally destroyed wharfage facilities along Nanaco Creek Thames River which made long sea voyage possible without fear of being stranded ashore on hostile coasts or encountering dangerous natives encountered during exploratory voyages such as those undertaken by Vasco da Gama in search for India's eastern route to China via South Asia in 1498–99 or Ferdinand Magellan's failed circumnavigation attempt in 1521–22 known as The Malay Archipelago Route (Galleon Fleet) . On February 17th 1860 Samuel Morse sent his first telegraph message from Baltimore through Long Beach Harbour utilizing galvanized wire stretching between two posts near modern day Pacific Palisades Boulevard east of Canoga Avenue
