Long Beach, New York (formerly known as Plattville) is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Garden City–Norwalk, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1798 as part of the Canandaigua Patent by Jonas Green and his family. The name "Plattville" originated from an early settler's daughter who named her home after one of her brothers-in-law. A sawmill founded in 1813 by Nicholas Long established the town's first trade: chopping wood for local farmers. At the same time, Long had ambitions to make Plattville into a major commercial center onthe Eastern Shore of Long Island. In 1828 he acquired 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land east of Plattsburgh and began construction on what would become Long Beach Pierhead—later known as Pier Head Landing—and busiest harbor on the East Side of Long Island. By 1830 Long had built two schools and three churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1800), Congregationalist Church (1810), and Methodist Episcopal Church (1831). In 1834 John Fenton purchased some land west of Plattsburgh and started building what would become Pineshore Resort; it opened in 1836 with 230 rooms and 5 miles (8 km) of wharfage on Lake Ontario naval vessel USS Constitution under Commodore Israel Dyer USN (). In 1840 Anthony Trollope arrived from England with his wife Catharine Trollope to start a new life in America; they became pioneers in farming around this time near what is now called Park Slope in Brooklyn. Catharine Trollope also founded Towson Female Seminary which later became Fordham University; she served as its first president from 1861 until her death in 1902. Anthony Trollope donated $5 million to build Stokes Hall at Towson University which serves as its main campus today. AfterCatharine TrollOPE's death an anonymous donor provided $1 million more forStokes Hall so that it could be used as a presidential library during Franklin Roosevelt's presidency (). A post office called Southold was established at Whatcom Necklace ln., within present day Northport Township, Nassau County, on November 14th, 1850 by order of President James Kossuth USN (); it continued operation until 1865 when all New York state postal offices were closed due to financial problems caused by Reconstruction Era policies (). In 1862 Samuel Hulton bought 10 acres (4 ha) northeast of what is now downtown long beach for $500 () after being inspired by Jens Jensen’s plans for a resort there (). He renamed it Kingsbury Point () and developed it into one ofLongBeach’s most popular tourist destinations through sailboats or jet skis () . In 1886 David Lighthouse (), beside Kingsbury Point Light House (), became operational after years delays caused by vandalism (). The lighthouse keeper’s quarters have been preserved along with several items from inside the light house including an old fog horn salvaged from another nearby fortification abandoned during American Civil War (.75 inches diameter). Today both Lighthouse Keeper’s Quarters and Fresnel Lens are open to visitors without charge while King’s Ferry Cafe remains closed due to lackadaisical management but offers delicious views across Kingsbay Harbor towards Queensboro Bayou just beyond single-file docks located behind modern day buildings on Main Street Northeast .
