By 1935, all major retailers had located here: A&P hardware store on Main Street; The Clothing Store on Broadway; Peddle Hall Clothing Store on First Avenue; and Joes Bazaar grocery store on Seventh Avenue. The Second World War led to an increased demand for military munitions production at nearby Huntington Naval Air Station (now Hanscom AFB), which caused significant economic development around the base including new housing developments and a large shipyard that produced warships such as USS Constitution (1875) and USS Perry (1898). postwar development also brought about advances in transportation through incorporation of Los Angeles Boulevard into Long Beach's arterial highway network

The history of Long Beach can be traced back to two early settlements on both sides of the Hudson River: One by Purdy Richardson (1693–1785), who named his farm Point Conception after his birthplace in Cornwall England; and another by Nicholas Wright (1715–1775), which he called Beechwood because many trees there grew especially largeley for lumbering purposes. Both villages were abandoned within months of each other due to lack of water access or disease epidemics that struck both locations during their early years as American colonies developed around them. Long Beach was founded on December 12, 1871, by Dr. George Long and his wife Mary. The town rapidly grew in population, with a population of over 100 people in 1881. In 1902, the city hosted the Pan American Exposition, which attracted many people to the area for vacation. The first post office in Long Beach opened on December 15, 1892. The town quickly became an important commercial center due to its location at the mouth of the Long Beach River. Over time, Long Beach developed into a major financial and industrial center with a strong cultural influence throughout California and parts of Mexico. In 1967, Long Beach City Council voted to annex adjacent Hermosa Beach into the city limits; this occurred as part of an effort to create a more cohesive community within the greater Los Angeles region. As part of this annexation process, Hermosa Beach became one of the most heavily populated areas outside of downtown Los Angeles. On July 1, 1984, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced that Long Beach would become an independent city under his leadership after years of struggle with state government officials over control over city finances and land matters.
